RE: Trip planning

I'm a planner. 2010 is in the books and 2011 is under advisement. If you don't book 11 months in advance in our state parks here you are the one left out because your rig won't fit what is left or it is completely booked. I like to look forward to my trips and not be disappointed when I arrive to find out nothing is left or big enough for us. That being said-we are going out west next year and we will be winging some of it, just not the most popular places. FWIW-if you want Fort Wilderness at Halloween next year you are too late. The park is booked and they are not releasing any more reservations until next year.

RE: How many nights out this year

For 2009 we will have 43 nights in MH, 2 nights in a cabin (just me and dd) and 7 nights in a condo skiing. Life is only worth living til the next vacation!

RE: What is the most useful cooking implement in the RV?

toaster oven, electric skillet, crock pot. Nothing else needed if hooked to power or have a generator.

RE: Flamingo Campground/Everglades

Great campground. No sites are reserved. You get there and fins a site you like and park. There really is no shade so come prepared with an awning preferably one with a screen. Bring a telescope or really good binoculares the stars are amazing. Lots of hiking, bird watching, etc. Best bet is to have a generator if you don't have one on board. they are strict with when you can run it but we appreciated that. It was very peaceful when they were off. think boy scout camping. Everything should be able to be used without electricity if need be. We brought our lantern, cook stove to use outside so we didn't make the MH hot inside. We were gone most of the day: took tours and hiked, went to visitor centers and observation areas, did ranger talks. The only power in the campground is the outlet in the bathhouse. Anytime we went in there someone's phone was plugged into the wall. I made a few calls to Japan while it was handy:D . If you need water when you get there there is an area to fill near the dump station which is in front of the bathhouse. (We don't run with full tanks too much water). Enjoy! Can't wait to go again.

RE: Fort Desoto Park, Pinellas County, FL

Stay out of area 2 namely the sites around 148-154. There is an RV eating tree there that cost us $8000 for a new roof. Park knows about it yet does nothing. 4 RV's hit it the weekend we stayed there. Also don't believe their maps. We booked the end space the 2nd time we stayed and they added 3 more spaces next to us. Last year they raised their rates so it cost over $100 for a weekend. We don't go anymore so you can have our spot. it's not that nice to us. We have found better places for far less.

RE: Florida State Park Frustrations?

I do not find it hard to book space. I book 11 months out. Remember the saying "the early bird gets the worm?" I'm the early bird. I do wish FL was similar to GA with its reservation paying policy. Pay a deposit for 1 night and if you aren't there in time they cancel your res and keep the money. It leaves more walk up spaces for those who aren't able to plan ahead. For everyone's info FL must keep 10% of its sites open for walk ups. Those are also the sites they give to the hosts. So no matter what there is always 90% available by advance booking. I've never been to a SP yet in FL that had more than 3 hosts for the whole campground, and I have camped all over the state.

RE: Have you ever seen such a harsh no-refund policy?

We have camped there twice with our camping group. The first time it cost us $7000. Not a typo. They have trees that really need to be trimmed and people who park in the road and won't move their cars which make you hit the trees. County claims 0 responsibility. In fact the first time we were there 5 rigs hit the same tree. There is no sewer, cable, wifi. Which doesn't mean much to me because we usually camp at state and county parks...except here in FL most of them are between $12-25 night not $40. Our site was so tight with vegetation we could not put out our awning either time. Was worried about the limbs scratching our RV as we had just taken delivery of our new MH for the 2nd trip. Will agree it's a nice park with a beach which is nowhere near the camping area(3 mi away). I feel the county could recoup some monies and not rape the campers if they would charge an entrance fee to beach users and fishing people(they get to use the park for free, only the campers have to pay)so the entire maintenance of the park rests on the campers shoulders- yet it is a huge area that needs to be taken care of. Our group likes to book there once a year but we won't go back anymore. The camping area is not nice enough for that price. VERY old bathrooms, VERY old playgrounds, and VERY narrow roads and sites make it a cross off in my book. There are many nicer areas to go to and I can drive to their beach since it's free for day users.

RE: Florida Campgrounds

If you stay away from RV parks and stick to county, city, state parks mostly mid week this can be easily done. We are in Central FL and do not have problems getting in Sun-Thurs pretty much anywhere. since winter in FL is a good time to camp in tents that's when the tenters and weekend warriors come out to play. Have a great time and discover the hidden FL that the locals know about.

RE: Yosemite fresh water fill gery dump...

Thank you for the replies. with a 16 gal barker tote I don't think dumping inside a restroom will happen. little too heavy, however we can hook to car and pull to dump station. I thought I had read somewhere there were small drains near restrooms to dump grey into much like at Cloudland Canyon in GA. How do they know you have run your generator for 2 hours already? Do people tattle on each other or do they give you set times? The website says 6 am-10 pm run sparingly. We have only dry camped in the Everglades and it was not too crowded so didn't have to deal with all the people at the same time like Yosemite, trying to work out how we will do things if camping in park.

RE: Questions about Jetty Park Campground..

I see you have a site with sewer. Be aware that a lot of the sewer sites are right on top of each other and your neighbor's elec box and sewer hose might be very close to your site. We were lucky when we camped there that no one was assigned the site to our right as the sewer pipe was less than 4 ft to our picnic table. Not appetizing in the least. There is a big open area behind the RV's in the area you are camping so you can spread out back there and play games, etc. Not much room between units though. The closer you get to the beach the tighter they become and there is no room behind the units either as there is another site right behind. I'm surprised someone said it took 10 minutes to walk to the beach. I guess they don't walk a lot as we were further away and it did not take that long. We have a bicycle trailer we load with everything and push it to the beach. If the beach is too far like Topsail we hook it to a bike and pedal.

Yosemite fresh water fill gery dump...

I have read somewhere that there are grey water dumps near the bathrooms at the campgrounds inside Yosemite. Is this true or will we have to dump only at the dump station? Also are there fresh water fills in the campgrounds or do we need to come in with a full fresh water tank? Can generators be run sometime during the day to restore batteries? Is there a time limit if so? Like no more than an hour at a time? Can we get to each location in Yosemite from the campgrounds by riding their shuttles or will we need to use our car for some locations? We are planning to be there in early May and will have a 35 ft MH with toad. I have read all the threads I could find so thank you for helping us out.

RE: RV storage in Reno NV

RE: RV storage in Reno NV

Right now we don't have any camping memberships but will get PA before our trip. Thanks for the storage info I will look them up on a map to see where they are.

RV storage in Reno NV

We are planning our long distance from FL out west and back trip for next summer. Because of work schedules we cannot do it all in one shot. We are planning to get to Reno and leave our MH in storage and then pick it up a few weeks later and continue our trip. Does anyone have any good ideas for RV storage or casinos, hotels, campgrounds with storage where we could leave it and what a going cost might be? Close access to the airport would be a good thing as well.

RE: Just got back from Camp Hatteras

I will 3rd Ocean Waves. Stayed there last year for a week in July. Lots of families lots of kids, short walk to beach, has a pool and a small playground. Lots of grass and definitely half the price of any other camps in the area. We looked at the others while driving by and they looked like the prerequisite KOA's.

RE: Handy Hints, Gadgets, Products & Gizmos

I think they put the license plate on it for checkins. I always try to remember my dh's book that he writes gas mileage in because I wrote our plates in it. They always seem to need this info.

RE: Family camping

Go for it! We moved from a 5th wheel 3 bunk to a 35J Itasca Sunova 2 bunk model (we only have 1 child). The grandpa was right we did get it for the adults...our kid was just too close for us in the backseat of the truck. We like to talk "adult issues" while traveling as my dh isn't home a lot so that's our time to communicate on our long trips. Our dd has everything she will ever need: movies, games, music, books, napping, I play cards with her or just snuggle on the sofa together as we go down the road. We stop less and get to go farther (as long as my dh's bladder holds out). Life is easier, dh hated backing in the 5th wheel and the MH is so much easier. Winnebago builds a great product and after 2.5 years we have had no issues at all (unlike our 5th!) We would NEVER have a towable again. But that's us...do what is right for your family and enjoy your trips. You are building great memories for your family and that's what it's all about.

RE: florida state parks

The additional rate will be built into the camping fee the same as it is now. We don't pay for a FL SP pass because it doesn't save any money for camping. It's only for those parks that are day use or that you aren't camping at that you want entrance into. I guess we are saving $120 bucks a year now.....

RE: Suwannee River State Park, FL

Do not believe Reserve America on their map on what each site has for Suwannee SP. I know this for a fact. We booked the PT site for a rally with FPUC and they changed the site numbers after the revamping all of the campground but STILL have not changed it on Reserve America. Also for your info several campers have complained about the sewer stacks being very high and very forward of the sites. Thought I'd let you know. Call the office at the actual park to get the exact #'s of sites that will work for you. Do not let them push you off on RA. You might have to book through RA but do not trust them with good info on this park.

RE: Do you visit your National Parks and Monuments?

We visit as many as we can possibly fit in with the time we have available. We have bought our daughter the deluxe National Parks Passport with all the stickers since its inception and she loves going to the desk at each National Park and putting her new stamp in her book. She also does the Jr Ranger program if there is one available. This week we are in Charleston, Sc and have visited Charles Pickney NHS, Fort Sumter, and Fort Moutrie. I understand about the ones closest to us not being visited. I've lived in Central FL my whole life and finally got to Cape Canaveral National Seashore last month.
