RE: Custer SP Resort

That is for the concessionaire that runs the lodges etc. If you work for the park itself, there is a different price. It has been 4 years since we worked there, but the price they quoted is ridiculous. Call the park office and see what an employee pays at the employee CG off Game Loop or at Sun City and at the employee sites at the CGs in the park as well. Maybe talk with Craig Pugsley or Lance Catron I was referred to the concessionaire by Craig because we were wanting a paid position and he only has volunteer positions which, incidently, come with a free site.

RE: Custer SP Resort

sent an email to the GM and asked for some clarification and this is his reply: The $480 per month is part of your entire compensation package. It is not based per paycheck. This would include 3 meals per day, 7 days a week and the RV spot. Depending on the number of paydays that are in that particular month, there would be a deduction of $240 per pay check (less if there were 3 paydays). Total Deduction between you and your wife: June $960 July $960 August $960 September $960, etc. Our compensation package is similar to those of Yellowstone, Glacier, Teton, etc. We actually charge less than most. I’m sorry if you feel that this is excessive. We have many work campers that work for us and the majority of them have returned for many years. Frankly I do think this is excessive since I really wouldn't see us partaking of 3 meals per day in their cafeteria. Doing the math, working 40 hours per week each at their proposed pay rate subtract the taxes and the "fees" and we would clear just over $4.00 per hour each! What a disappointment, and to think they say "majority of them have returned for many years".

Custer SP Resort

Just hung up with the HR guy at the concessionaire for Custer SP. We were all excited about getting a paying job working and living in the park. We asked a bunch of questions and were surprised to find out they take $220 out of your paycheck (every two weeks) for your campsite. Not a complete deal breaker until I questioned him further and it would be the same for my wife's check too. That's $880 for June, July and Sept and a whooping $1320.00 for August since there are 3 paychecks that month. This just doesn't seem correct and I told him it seemed way excessive since the daily rate at one of the public campgrounds is only $720 for an entire month and he told me that is the way they have always done it. Has anyone actually worked for them and is this the case? I am still having a hard time believing this is correct. Phil

RE: New Full Timing! New (used) unit! Ready to go...

congrats! We started fulltiming much the same way. We lived in our rig for over 2 years while still "slaving for the man". We have since taken early retirements and are traveling in between work camping assignments. We also tried a motorcycle lift on our class A for our Harley. Here is a post I wrote about it. Mighty Hauler I have no first hand info of how reliable the other brands of lifts are but please stay far away from these guys for your sake and the safety of the rest of us traveling down the highway. Enjoy your fulltime adventures, Phil

RE: Mighty Hauler

sounds like you are making a well informed decision Joe. The problem I could see on their lift was they used 1/4" steel plates at the point where the most stress was applied by the bike and lift bouncing from hitting bumps on the highway which are the plates that tore. I asked why they didn't use heavier material like they did in the rest of lift and was told "1/4 inch is all that would fit there". Wish I had noticed this before I invested in it but now all I can do is pass the word. Good luck on your decision, we have switched to a cargo trailer with DW following in the former toad. Safe travels, Phil

RE: Mighty Hauler

I know this is a little late but wanted to add our experience with Mighty Hauler. Purchased one in December 2012, had it mounted to our 36' DP Class A at their "factory". Company appears to be one guy who has his Dad help him with the installs. Loaded the bike up (Harley full dresser) and headed south Christmas day. Tried to unload it in Alabama and the lift would not go down, called Mighty Hauler and talked to "Dad" he said shake it back and forth really hard and it should work. That worked but I had to shake it really violently. Loaded up after a week and drove to our final destination in Texas, same story unloading it, had to shake it hard to get it to go down. A couple of weeks ago loaded bike for trip back North, went 200 miles and found bike and lift leaning away from back of motor home and found the structural steel plates had a 1" tear in them. The tears appeared to be caused by the bouncing on the highway and the lift/motorcycle and toad were about fall off! Called Mighty Hauler and they wanted pictures but offered no assistance. I rented a U-haul trailer and towed the bike home while DW followed in the toad. Returned the lift and demanded our $$ back, they did return the price of the lift plus tax but refused to refund the money we paid them for their labor to install this piece of junk (over $800.00). They finally (reluctantly) refunded the cost of the u-haul trailer but flat refused to assist with the extra costs the failure of their lift caused us. Our bike weighs under 850 lbs and our toad weighs less than 5,000 lbs so we were well under the advertised capacity of the lift which is up to 1,000 lb motorcycle while towing up to 6,000 lbs. Hopefully I am not too late to warn you about this product. The lift is NOT what it is advertised to be and the company is a rip off. This is all my opinion of course but is based on some very scary facts. Phil

RE: Breaks Interstate Park, Virginia; Has anyone stayed there?

this brings back some memories. Stayed there in a tent probably 20 or more years ago. Went to Haysi and had a cheeseburger at a local dive bar named Buster's. Guy at the park recommended it, said "it's the best durn cheeseburger in Virginia", was pretty good if I remember correctly. Enjoy the area, very pretty scenery. Phil

RE: suburban water heaters

if you have an external shower you might want to make sure it is turned off at the faucet and not just at the sprayer head this would allow the hot and cold to mix and you would only get luke warm water through the rest of the coach. Same goes for the shower head inside, so check it too. Phil

RE: Good weekend camping in March in Indiana

We used to go to Turkey Run SP every year either the last week end of Feb. or the 1st week end of March. The Maple Syrup Festival is going on in and around Rockville Indiana those week ends and it made a great winter break. The power is on at the park but the water is shut off and the shower houses/restrooms are closed in the campground. They do charge a nightly rate but it is 1/2 price of normal rate. The ranger comes around to collect after you are parked. We would fill the water tank up before leaving home and then I would re-winterize after the week end was over. The dump stations were open but no water for rinsing so plan accordingly and take some water to rinse the tank. Have fun, Phil

RE: Hondo, Texas

Wingerphil, The Quiet Texas in D'Hanis looks like it will be perfect. It is halfway, pull-thrus and right off the 90 Hwy. Plus PA prices are not bad. Thanks I will call tomorrow. Will their pull-thrus support a 40' towing or will we need to un-hook? Thanks again. I really appreciate all the help! Janet sorry I didn't get back to you sooner Janet. You will have enough room for a 40'er and toad. Phil

RE: Hondo, Texas

Quiet Texas RV Park also has a new (additional) location in D'Hannis about 5 miles west of Hondo on 90. We stayed there for a few days last month. Trains were not a bother at night but pretty steady during the day. The sites were long gravel pull thru's with full hook ups and Wifi. They are a Passport America Park if you are a member. We have also stayed at the Escapee's park in D'Hannis but all their sites are back in, nice place but not really the best for a quick overnight stay. Phil

RE: Winter skirting

if heating the area under the rig is what you are looking for, I would suggest a drop light with a 75w or 100w bulb hung in safe manner in the space. May need more than one depending on the rig.

RE: DirecTV or Dish - follow up from Oregon RV'er

Are you only a part time camper? Have you considered 'Dish For My RV'? Not a good package if you a full timer or have Dish at home. I have it as well as many others. You can do a search.Do a search on "Pay as you go" or "Dish For My RV" and you will get plenty of reading. Thanx And we are Full-timers - so why do you think it isn't a good deal -"Dish for My RV" - for us ? I will do a search on Pay as you go" .. but thought that was for a house ... which we don't have therefore could not get DirecTV hooked up, so are going the DishTV route. we are Fulltimers also and have the "pay as you go" plan from Dish Network. We work camp regularly and are often provided with cable TV at our work camping gigs. I can "suspend" my dish programming by simply not paying the monthly charge and use the provided cable. Once we hit the road again we give Dish a call and "voila" back to sat. TV again. This saves us some $$ while we are sitting and making $$'s ;) Works really well for us. Phil

RE: Route South through Alabama to Mexico Beach?

X2 what Dave's wife said. I have found that Dothan seems worse for traffic than B-ham or Montgomery. Once in Florida we jump on I-10 and take that to US 19 and head south.

We also stayed at Ameristar Casino RV Park earlier this year. Nice place with full hook up, pull throughs.

RE: Covered bridge fest rockville,in

not Brown County it is in Parke County due west of Indy. Biggest and nicest festival in the Midwest IMHO. Each community in the county has something going on for theose couple of weeks plus the area is great to tour. Crowds are a little tough on the week ends though. Have fun, wish I was going too. Phil

RE: Cable Hookup for Dish Tailgater

I also have the Tailgator and to avoid the issues you are having I purchased an exterior cable plug at camping world that has the little door to cover the connection when not in use. I mounted it on the outside near the TV, and ran the RG6 to the Sat reciever. Of course I had to drill a fairly large hole for the coax before mounting the box which I sealed with silicone around the box edges. Phil

RE: The new fangled RV antennas

camping buddy installed one to replace his batwing. Said it was pretty easy to do. One thing I liked was the unit has a light meter on it to show the strength the incoming TV signal to help you point it in the right direction.
