RE: Manual to Power Awning - Upgrade Current or get New?

Thanks to all for your input! Can always count on this forum for information. I'm aware of the power being something else that can go wrong, but at this point we have a manual awning we just don't ever use due to the hassle of opening and closing it, it just doesn't work smoothly. Also, we are very active so tend to run a lot when we're somewhere, seldom do we have a day where we just sit in the campground with the awning open. So for our use I would like to open the awning just to have a cup of coffee or two under it, then close it while we run around for the day, then open it back up for dinner. Again, with our manual awning I seldom bother to put it out as I know I just have to retract it a short while later. The Dometic 9100 is the model we're looking at, and it does have a tilt adjustment to dump rain, but I believe it may be manual. The owners guide I downloaded isn't very detailed and I've never seen one in person, so I'm not sure how it works, other than you can tilt it. So, to summarize, for our needs a power awning will be most useful even with some of the downsides. At this point with the age of our existing awning, we're thinking of going with new. While I am concerned about holes where the new doesn't quite fit in place of the old, getting a whole new unit seems to make the most sense. We're planning on ordering it on Monday. Again thanks to all! where are you getting your awning and thje price if you don't mind saying. I'm looking for a 12 foot 9100 model and am not having luck getting a competetive price on the complete unit.

RE: 5th wheel brakes

resolution to brake problem-MAYBE !! I found out that I had Dexter auto adjusting brakes with no adjustment needed according to the handbook that came with my trailer. The number 1 problem with weak braking (according to Dexter ) was too small a wire size and low voltage. According to their chart I should have had 10 gauge wire if my run was over 30 feet. It was about 35 feet. It came from the factory with 12 gauge to the axles and 16 gauge to the opposite axles. As suggested on here I ran 10 gauge to the center of both axles and made a 4 way connection at the center with 12 gauge run for about 5 feet to each individual brake magnet. After soldering the connections I have 11.78 volts at rear of truck and 10.7 volts at each brake. After testing it did twice as good but not as good as I wanted. Going on the Dexter website it said after self adjusting brakes were installed you had to manually adjust them to a slight drag at first. It said if you didn't they would never adjust right. I jacked up trailer again (bless that 6 point lift and found that I had to tighten 3 out of the 4 brakes before they made contact. I have not pulled the wheels off to check for grease but I believe I've solved the problem. If I haven't I will pull the wheels next and check the brake pads for grease. The dear wife stayed mad at me for 2 days because she said the trailer was new and I shouldn't be working on it. As I keep reading about different problems on this website I feel more and more confident that I'll probably fix problems to my satisfaction better than the dealer will. Bless RV NET

RE: 5th wheel brakes

RE: 5th wheel brakes

I don't want to lock my brakes up on the road, I simply want better brakes and am asking for advice on an aftermarket controller. My present setting is full on for the integrated controller, according to the dealer the controller is limited to 12 volts maximum and is adjusted in percentages of 10% at a time. therefore a setting of 10.0 on the controller is 12 volts at the controller output post.

RE: 5th wheel brakes

.If I pull the wire from the breakaway switch I have 13.3 volts which will lock the wheels. Maybe I am mis reading something. Pulling the breakaway should give a max of 12V. Not 13.3V. You can only get 13.3 if the truck is running. If not running, 12V is max available at the plug. Other wise...have you checked your trailer ground? That is the white wire from the junction box. Might want to clean that up. The breakaway gets its ground from the battery. So since the breakaway locks the wheels, that indicates you may have a problem with the trailer ground. If you reread my original post you will see I ran a new ground wire, before I did that I only got 11.2 volts at the junction box at pin box. If you check a fully charged 12 volt battery you will read 13.2 volts not 12 volts. When I pulled my breakaway switch I checked the voltage at the same junction box with no power (120 volt ac)hooked up to trailer. I have 4 6 volt agm batteries on the trailer so I kinow i'm good there. I agree rewiring the brake connections to a star connection would help but it's hard for me to get under the trailer and I want to fix this problem once and for all. On an older truck with a utility trailer and a cheap controller I would get the same voltage my alternator was putting out (before any resistant voltage drops). This is a 39 foot trailer 3700 rl montana big sky with 7000 lb axels so the brakes should be large enough but with 16000 lb gross load it is unsafe to pull this trailer in heavy traffic without a better controller. I might mention I also have a Banks speed brake that I added 2 years before to help with this problem. The trailer brakes simply do not stop the trailer by themselves or anywhere near it

5th wheel brakes

I have a 2008 duramax dually with integrated brake controller which has never worked to my satisfaction. The chevy dealer blamed the trouble on my 2004 camper. I bought a 2013 camper and I have the same trouble. On the deisel forum page they mentioned a likely culpret is a bad ground from the truck. I ran a new ground wire and replaced the plug installed on the truck to be sure that wasn't the trouble. I have 11.78 volts at the junction box at the trailer pinwheel with max brakes applied and the trailer hooked up. After 3 days waiting for help from my chevy dealer it appears the controller is limited to 12 volts max by the computer which is apparently my problem. If I pull the wire from the breakaway switch I have 13.3 volts which will lock the wheels. My question is will an aftermarket controller use the available voltage (approximately 14 volts )to work with or will it still be limited to 12 volts. I tried to order hydraulic brakes from the factory but they weren't available and at the moment I can't afford to retrofit them myself although I hope to do so in the future.

RE: dometic 9100 automatic awning

Maybe no one understood that I was looking for help finding a 12 foot electric awning (dometic 9100). Can anyone help me? see previous post, thanks

dometic 9100 automatic awning

I have a 2013 big sky montana with an 18 foot awning on the camper. It appears to be the 9100 model but does not say so anywhere. I do have model numbers on the struts, etc. thats where I came up with this model. I have a 13 foot slide on the same side that I would like to install a 12 foot awning that looks the same. Black clad, black hardware and grey/black fabric. Does anyone know where to find the best price for the complete package. I would also need the top (tube?) rail to install the fabric in. Everywhere I look they all want to break down the model to replacement parts only. Surely I can find a complete price with the rocker switch inside like my original. I do not need the remote that I have now because we never use it. The awning would be mounted on the slide not above it. I also have awning toppers on all three slides. This is a 3700 rl 39 foot camper.

RE: gas dryers

my question was not which would be cheaper electric or gas but the fact that you could use gas on a 30 possible amp site. to use a 230lot volt dryer you would need to be on a 50 possible amp site but the dryer would be fed by 30 amp 230 site volts thus not using all the power.

flooring

has anyone replaced the carpet and linoleum in their 5th wheel with the large tile (granite?)that comes in an upscale motor home. My 5th wheel is new but I would like to change the floor if this is possible.

gas dryers

has anyone put a gas dryer in their 5th wheel vs electric. It would seem to dry a lot faster and could be used even in a 30 amp hookup.Does it seem to use much gas to operate.

RE: NEW 5TH WHEEL SLIDE AWNINGS YES OR NO??

I had awnings over my windows on my old coach and i felt they were a good way to reduce heat inside the coach also i feel they help reduce material fading due to uv rays however i don't have them on my fiver,i think that my day-night shades do just as good a job and they are far more flexable. I do however have a full-sized awning on my slide-outhttp://i728.photobucket.com/albums/ww289/MPI_Mallard/2012-2013%20Florida%20pics/Picture015.jpg it's fantastic and gives me more usable "patio space" when we get a crowd and with it out it also cut down on radiant heat inside my fiver! reference to the above awning did you install it yourself? Would you tell me the cost and where you purchased it?is it electric?if you did install it could you let me know how much time it took and if you needed 2 people to do this. wprice5441

RE: Frozen Black Holding Tank

why not heat water on the stove and keep pouring it into the holding tank until all is melted. This would seem like a faster way, also as it seeped out it would gradually clead the dump opening

4 door Norcold fridge.

I have a new montana bog sky 3700 model. The freezer doors do not fit tight enough. There is a 1/8 to 1/4 inch play in the seal, so loose that frost is clogging up the right freexer door and actually has to be chipped of to reshut the door. In the owner's manual it said if the doors weren't tight to take back to the dealer to be adjusted. I'm camping for a month in the mountains of NC. I would really like to adjust it myself and save a trip and the loss of camping. I have looked but see no way to adjust the tightness or door seal. Does anyone know how to do this? Note I was just told by my wife that it was a Norcold model but believe she is mistaken. She's right Norcold model 1210 Help please

RE: putting in a 50 amp hook-up

If you reference aluminum wire you'll see why I used 6 ga triplex and quoted that same table you show along with a single conductor copper ground 10 ga

RE: putting in a 50 amp hook-up

you can get this outlet box at Lowes in 30 amp and 50 amp in the outdsoor enclosure with directions inside the cover with instructions for wiring it. These are specific for outdoor rv hookups and are simple t wire if you look at the picture. I've bought both they run 25-35 bucks, pretty cheap and you don't need to order. I used 6/3 triplex direct burial aluminum rated for 65 amps and a seperate 10 gauge copper groung wire thwn black, I would have used green but they were out of that color. My run was close to 100 feet and I still put it in 1 inch pvc conduit even though it was not required by code. It will give 250 volts between the 2 hot wires and 125 from hot to neutral or ground which should also be verified to be sure your ground is correct.

RE: First trip with Goodyear RST G614 tires

http://www.factoryauthorizedoutlet.com/porter-cable/products/C2002-WKR.asp I bought this compressor last week for about the same price with the difference of a 6 gallon tank for faster top-off of tires on the recommendation of another member. It's factory reconditioned but has the extra parts you need.Bill
