RE: We have a winner for Oxidation.

While traveling through Alaska this summer... a couple of big motor homes parked next to me at a campsite. I started to wash my rig... and they stopped me and told me to use 3 tablespoons of diesel mixed in 5 gallons of water... They said that's all they have used on their rigs...
I tried it and it got rid of all the black streaks almost without any elbow work... and most of the bugs....
They told me to use 1 teaspoon of baking soda in 1 gallon of water for the bugs.... I have not used that yet... as the baking soda is a bit gritty...
But the 3 tablespoons of diesel works like a charm. I have washed my righ 3 times now during the trip... and it shines like a new one. Even washed my truck with it the last time...

RE: Another weight question

sch911,
Best explanation I have seen on how to figure tow weight.
Thanks!

RE: Got new tires for the fiver

What would be the advantage of using nitrogen in the tires?
I normally pull my 5er at 60-65... have had almost no problems with regular air... but I do see lots of people using nitrogen.
So I wonder why?

RE: nudist colony/camping?

I got into this thread by accident.
I object to it being shown and think it should be moved to "Nudist Camping" or something.
It definitely does not belong on the 5th wheel section, nor in regular camping sections.
I respect others rights to do what they want... but they should be respectful also. To post things about nudist... in the regular threads... is not respectful. If they (the nudists) want respect... then they should give it. That's fair. They don't want us cramming our views down their throats... why should they be allowed to do it to those of us that choose not to live like that?
I also ask the moderator to move the posts on nudists to where they belong.
Thanks
This is solely my opinion... only.

RE: No Electric Hot Water

If you mentioned it.... I didn't see it...
But did you open the by pass valve on the hot water heater?
On mine, I have to close the valves to the hot water heater and open by-pass valve when I winterize it.
And then I have to reverse the process when I go to use it.
Just a thought.

RE: Road Advise

Definitely get a GPS.... they range from about $79 to uppity. We have the Garmin 350... which is a middle of the road unit and am thoroughly satisfied with it. It has saved a lot of arguments between me and the "navigator" that can't read a map!
Also, you need a set of trouble markers in case you bread down. I got the triangles instead of flares because they last longer.
My theory about the snow chains is this.... if it snows we don't go. But we plan on not being where it can snow on us.
We'll be getting to Washington state about September this year. We've never been there... yet. :)

RE: Wheel Bearings

Thanks guys.... Just what I needed.
80 is definitely not too high to do it. I got an estimate today from a dealer and he wanted $187 for all 4 wheels.... which was why I was looking for the pictures.
Thanks again.

Wheel Bearings

Anyone know of a website or someplace where I might get a picture of the wheel bearings on a 5th wheel trailer?
I know there would probably be several types... but I have to grease the wheel bearings on mine and cannot find a picture.
I have a sunnybrook 2001.
Thanks

RE: Jayco 345bhds

I agree with Bob975...
5vers drop from 12% to 15% of the trailer weight in the back of the truck. 1/2 ton is a bit light for most 5vers. I see some using a 1/2 and they get by... but if you're looking at anything over 26 feet... you should consider the stress it's going to put on your truck.
Enjoy your travels... and one way of doing that is to be safe.

RE: Ford Explr Sport Trac towing 5er?

Hey, I'm in.... got my lawn chair and I'll get the pop and popcorn.... cause watching this kind of contraption is going to be funny...
Just hope no one gets hurt.
On the serious side... it's just dangerous. To move weight you need something that will do the job... pint sized wanna be pickups are too dangerous. Your taking lots of risks especially if your family is riding with you.

RE: Grey Tank slide gate valve

I would not use Liquid Wrench as it has solvents in it that are corrosive to plastic.
I had problems with my 5er and had to replace the gate valves on 1 gray water and the black water tanks. I was told to take the nut off the pull handle... pull out the pull handle as far as I could and spray it with silicone. I was told the silicone would not affect the plastic.
I was also told the gate valve should last a life time... (I thought ... "Yeah right!").
As to design of where the gate valves are... I think Sunnybrooke definitely has the worst design I have seen. You have to drop the whole undercarriage just to get to the valves. It's about a 3 hour job just to get to one valve and there are 3 of them!!

RE: 5th wheel or

Had TT and 5er....
Like was said... no contest on room in the 5er... mucho bettero.
no contest on the storage... mucho mucho better.
No contest on the towability...
In fact... if you were to pull a TT on a windy day... then pull a 5er... I think that would sell you on the spot.
Just my opinion mind you...

RE: 5th wheel or

With your truck you would be severely limited in a fifth wheel. Remember far more weight will be placed in/on the truck with a fiver of the same length.
Well I don't know about what is said here. I know many people that pull 30 ft, 32 ft and even 34 ft 5vers with Silverado 2500's.
I myself pull a 28 ft 5ver and am looking to upgrade to a 34 ft 5ver in 2010... and I plan on keeping my 3/4 ton truck... I don't see the need to change trucks unless the pin weight causes overload in the truck...
Just my 2 cents worth.

RE: DRIVERS LICENSE IN ONTARIO CANADA

Let me see if I am understanding all this right...
If my trailer.... trailer alone... has an axle weight of more than 10,141 lbs or 4600kg, then I must have a drivers license that is A...
Or is it AR?
I read through the posts... and I'm a bit confused with it all.
Also, I just found out, that in the state of WI, the trailer tag is for the trailer and the truck tag is for the truck. For example, if my truck and trailer weighs 16,680 lbs, then all is ok because my trailer tag would take care of the weight of the trailer. But... the truck would be overweight when I hook up my 5ver as it will drop 1,420 lbs in the back of the truck. Therefore to be legal, I should have a class "D" tag on my truck. Which, since I have a class "C" now, it will be allowed until the next time I register the truck.
But... I do not have to change my drivers license in WI. I can drive on my "regular" drivers license.
What you guys are saying though, that if I do go into Canada, which I plan on doing, I must get an "A" license? right?
