RE: Brakeaway Switch/Cable

Just to reiterate, I know that the trailer is not going to come out of the situation unscathed and more than likely will flip or roll but again I don't see how the brake would prevent that, I can only imagine that once the landing gear or tongue hit the pavement the runaway trailer will be lost before the brakes do their intended job...Hopefully no one on this forum never has to experience it firsthand.

Brakeaway Switch/Cable

Relatively new to all this so bear with me. Just installed a new breakaway switch on my fiver. I'm sure it wouldn't be pretty at 60 mph but it just seems that during a breakaway situation wouldn't the 5vr or TT dropping onto it's landing gear or tongue be more effective in stopping it than 2 or 4 little brakes?Or am I completely missing something???

2001 Ford F-350

Local dealer has a 2001 f-350 7.3 diesel with 156k on it. Truck looks great no apparent body work, leaks, ect. Asking $12,500 for it. The big question is,assuming it's in good mechanical condition is this a fair price and what can I expect out of future longevity from this rig. Going to be towing a 7,000 lb.5'ver about 2-3k a year with it? P.S. Will buy a cheapo gas miser for a 40 mile a day round trip to work beater.I'm guessing I'll still come out ahead with not shelling out 50k+ for a new rig, full coverage insurance and property taxes.Any thoughts???

Battery Venting

I have relocated my 2 group 27 batteries to the front storage compartment of my 5th wheel. As far as venting them goes, do I need to run separate tubes to each battery box and then run the tubing outside or would it be sufficient to just install a soffit type vent on the front of the storage compartment. Kind of like how a gable vent works on a house??

RE: Battery upgrade wiring question

Sorry about the placement of the question I just figured that with all the views of this thread my question would be more easily understood. Like I said I' a newbie and don't always know the proper terminology on my own...Thanks for the reply though. P.S. What size fuse do you recommend?

RE: Battery upgrade wiring question

Newbie question so have pity on me...but if I'm running 2- 12v batt. in parallel do I need to separate fuses for each batter or just one for both? I am running 4 ga. cable from the converter to the battery and the ANL fuse holders are the only thing that will accept that ga. wire. Any ideas?

RE: P series tires

Ironically I have a brochure/ product catalog from Coachman circa 1990 and EVERY rig,5th wheel or travel trailer up to 29 ft. in the catalog shows them coming thru with P series tires on them. I am not endorsing this or even agree with it,but it just shows how far we've come in the last 23 years.

RE: Adding a 2nd battery,distance from converter?

Maybe I didn't explain it good enough. The batteries will only be side by side if I make a new 24ft run. Right now my battery compartment is about 6 feet from the only place where I can put another battery. I'm thinking that 6 feet is too long to add the 2nd. battery in parallel, so I figure re-wire so both are in the front compartment?

Adding a 2nd battery,distance from converter?

I have an older 25 ft. fiver. Tons of upgrades one of which is a new PD 4645 converter with 2/0 welding cable feeding the battery,1 group 27 12 volt. I am thinking of adding another battery but this would require mounting both batteries is in the front compartment. This would mean about a 24 foot run of new 2/0ga. wire but the batteries would be side by side. Question is would the distance from the converter be too long to be effective in recharging the battery bank?

New Tow Vehicle

Without this question turning into an all out gas vs diesel war,I'm looking to buy a new P/U to haul my 5,000 lb(dry) 25ft.fiver.I know all the pros of a diesel, but from what I've read here the new ones with all the emissions stuff they just don't seem to be the same haulers they used to be,plus the prices and maint. seem ridiculous. That being said I'm leaning toward a 3/4 ton gasser. I'm probably not even going to put 2,00k a year towing with the rig.For the low miles I'll be towing I really don't care about gas mileage, but I don't want to kill a $40k truck in 2 years either? Thoughts???

RE: No 12v w/o battery on shore power

BFL-13 If you were local I'd owe ya a beer or 2... Problem solved. The neg wire from the converter to the battery is in it's own terminal ring and separate from the ground cable which is in it's own terminal ring. The wire is #4ga. that's the reason for them being separate. When I just went outside after reading your post as I was taking the neg/ground wires off the battery post they touched and BINGO! Whewwww you just saved me from a full blown ulcer. Thanks a million!!!

No 12v w/o battery on shore power

Last March I installed a PD4645 converter in my 5th wheel.1990 Coachman no slides. All was well until this weekend when I pulled my battery out to check its' water level which was ok.While it was out I plugged into shore power to listen to the stereo...and nothing 12v had juice going to it. Everything is brand new cables, posts, grounds and is in perfect shape? I tested the converter by putting a multimeter on the converter + & - lugs and it's giving me 13.6? Any suggestions. Oh no blown fuses anywhere. I don't know how long it's been like this 'cause like I said I just took the battery out after 5 1/2 months.

RE: Open range TV cable routing

I know absolutely nothing about satellite,so I'll ask my dumb question. Do you need a box to get the signal?

PapPappy I'm wrong about something everyday of my life X10 and I'm OK with that ,the old saying is that you learn more from your failures than you do from your successes. And my skin is thicker than a rhino's hide but don't try to make people look stupid by twisting words and throwing some techno babble around. That's all.

Egos

In the few short months I've been a member of this forum I have found a wealth of knowledge here, and have also tried to share what limited knowledge I may have to others who like me are new at the RV game. From my posts and reading others there are some members out there who Just have to be right and know more than the next guy.Maybe they do but if my house is on fire and I say it is there are some that just have to say "No it's not it's just smoldering..." Come on people get over yourselves and try to be helpful and civil without being condescending.Just my rant.

Well Thank You for your permission professor. Was just trying to help the OP make an informed decision that turned into an ego war.
