RE: Some MiFi Questions

I am currently using my Verizon UM150 USB aircard.. Tested it today on work/job PC and all was well. I will be going on the road Aug/Sept... FT.. Plan to continue to work from home(on the road).... I will also upgrade to the MIFI card so my DW can get on the Internet. if you have a UM150, you probably got it at a time when contracts had no overage charges for going past 5gb per month. if i were you, i would NOT upgrade to the MiFi and instead look at getting a cradlepoint router like the MBR900 or MBR1000, which would allow you get more than one computer online with the UM150. many people would give an arm to have a verizon contract with no overage charges... and will tell you don't give that up if you don't have to. upgrading from um150 to a mifi is very likely to change your contract to one that has overage charges. beware! ps: to those interested in a cradlepoint, i have coupon code that will get you discount at a major reseller. pm me if interested.

RE: EVDO Router

Depends on the model of the USB aircard. We use the Cradlepoint MBR1000 with 4 lan ports and are quite happy. Go to Cradlepoint website: http://www.cradlepoint.com/products/mbr1000-mobile-broadband-039n039-router-3g4g-wireless-router# Check out the various models which all list the supported devices. For instance, the MBR1000 lists the following Verizon USB aircards as being supported: Verizon USB Huawei EC168 Novatel Ovation MC720 (Verizon USB720) Novatel Ovation MC727 (Verizon USB727) Novatel Ovation MC760 (Verizon USB760) Novatel MiFi 2200 Pantech UM150 Pantech UM175 Pantech UMW190VZ Pantech UMW190NCD Sierra Wireless AirCard 595U If yours is on the list, it's a go. You may need a print server for your printer, depending on whether it is net ready or not. Also, the MBR 1000 is a wifi router so if your laptops have wifi connectivity, you won't even need to plug them into the lan ports. We have two laptops on wifi and a print server connected to our laser printer on ours. It goes every where we go in the RV. When we arrive, we even let friends connect to our personal hotspot.

Wifi router for ATT LG USB connect turbo aircard

Has anyone found a wifi router, say similar to the Cradlepoint MBR1000 that will support the ATT aircard LG USB connect turbo? Apparently Cradlepoint does not support this aircard with no plans to do so in the future.

RE: Aircard WiFi routers???

MBR 1000 was my choice... supported air cards I believe your card is supported. JohnnyT

RE: Need router for Verizon air card to desktop & laptop

I use a Cradlepoint MBR1000. Your inquiry prompted me to test the download/upload speed in the Cradlepoint and plugged directly in my computer. I tested speeds three times in each location. The average of my results were as follows: Plugged into Cradlepoint: 1.52Mb/s down/ .37Mb/s up Plugged into computer: 1.15Mb/s down/ .29Mb/s up I expect the reason for the improved preformance is the fact that my Cradlepoint in located in the extreme front of the coach, behind the television. My computer is located on my desk, in the bowels of the bus. Another key element in favor of a USB760 verses a MiFi air card is the ability to plug an antenna in many non-WiFi cards. Furthermore I suspect that the computer the air card that the MiFi is in has to be on for the other machines to pick up wifi. Not so with the Cradlepoint. The only disadvantage, in my opinion in opting for a Cradlepoint card is that we are on the edge of 4G technology. What does that mean? Beats me. Maybe nothing for a few years. Maybe big changes. Now that Verizon has disassociated itself from third party suppliers suggest there may be changes in the wings. Right now there are only partial facts and speculations.

RE: Need router for Verizon air card to desktop & laptop

The Cradlepoint MBR1000 will do USB or ExpressCard. I have a 900 at home and a 1000 in the RV and both are excellent.

RE: Computer keeps dropping wireless connection

I've had the same problem with an HP laptop and a Cradlepoint MBR1000. My other laptops did not drop the connection. I've since put an MBR900 in the house and the HP does not lose the connection. My other laptops (a Dell and another HP) work with both wireless routers with no losses. It's something with the HP and the MBR1000 that I've yet to solve.

RE: HughesNet vs MiFi

We just dumped Hughesnet after using them for years. We too live in a rural area but have excellent verizon signal. Went with the USB760 (u can use an external antenna with the 760) and a cradlepoint MBR1000 router as we had every room in our house hard wired with cat 5 for the desktops when we had it built. We use the MBR wi-fi for the laptops. The speed was more than double HN. The only drawback is the 5 gig limit. Having 2 teens at home it gets used up fast. The MBR1000 also has an optional filter to keep the kids from viewing unwanted web sites.

RE: HughesNet vs MiFi

We had Hughes (house & last rig) as well as Wild Blue at the house and using aircards is the way to go. You may want to consider a router that can accept other cards rather than the MiFi. We use a Cradlepoint MBR1000 router with 2 Verizon cards (previously had 1 VZ & 1 Sprint attached) for both our rig and at the house. After over 2 yrs with this setup the only problems are the 5Gb (per card) limit and if you stay where there is no cell signal (has never happened to us). EVen with a poor signal you can usually connect.

RE: which cradelpoint router for home use

I use a MBR1000 in the house and RV. Have a 12Volt adapter for the RV. A MRB900 would also work very well and save a few dollars.

RE: WIRELESS INTERNET FROM VERIZON

... You can use a Cradlepoint MBR900 or MBR1000 router and a Verizon USB760 Modem. The modem can accept an antenna. The router can accept 5 connections. Just a minor correction here, the MBR900 can accept 30 connections, the MBR1000 can accept 64 connections. It's the MiFi that accepts 5 connections. Even the low end CTR350 router can accept 16 connections. I have a Verizon USB720 modem plugged into a CTR350 router and a Sprint USB760 modem plugged into a MBR900 router. Both combos work great. My employer covers the cost of the Sprint modem. I pay $48/month for the Verizon modem, grandfathered into the unlimited plan. The Sprint modem is used as our home internet connection while the Verizon modem is used when we travel. We live in a rural location where cable and DSL are not options.

RE: WIRELESS INTERNET FROM VERIZON

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've heard the MiFi has no accomodation for an outside antenna or a booster? This subject is of great interest to us as we are also looking for a reliable mobile solution. correct! You can use a Cradlepoint MBR900 or MBR1000 router and a Verizon USB760 Modem. The modem can accept an antenna. The router can accept 5 connections.

NEW version firmware (1.6.9) for MBR1000/MBR900, +

On 3/4/10 Cradlepoint officially released firmware version 1.6.9 for the MBR1000/MBR900/CTR500/CBA250/CBA750 routers. The biggest thing this new version provides is support for the U301. Other new modems that are now supported include: # Pantech UMW190 for Verizon # Pantech UM185 for Cricket # Sierra Wireless 305 USB (AKA "Lightning") for AT&T # Sierra Wireless 306 USB for AT&T and Telus # Ubee PXU1900 for CLEAR # ZTE MF668 for Rogers The new firmware also provides bug fixes, such as solving the Blackberry compatibility issues that have been plaguing users since RIM released their OS 5.0, and a couple new features, including "Aggressive Modem Reset". Get the new firmware here.

RE: cradlepoint router

The advantages of a router -- even if only 1 computer -- include: 1) ability to use multiple aircards (even from different networks at the same time) without loading the software on your computer; 2) ability to connect your computer via it's lan port and not change the connection type when you switch or plug in the air card; 3) increased security from having the router between you and the network (yes I'm overly concerned about security for myself & the dw); 4) if router has wireless then you can use your computer either direct connect or wifi to your own aircard; 5) you can place the aircard/router where you get the best signal and not necessarily where your computer is located. BTW, we use cradlepoint mbr1000 routers (1 in the stick n brik the other in the rig) as our sole internet connection for both personal & business use with 2 aircards and it has worked far better than expected and much better than when we had satellite (hughes on our last rig & wildblue at the house).

RE: Cradlepoint Routers

I just purchased an MBR1000 from the 3gstore. I was planning on replacing the Dlink DIR-625 router I've used for a couple of years. I did a side-by-side range test, and I was very surprised to find that the 1000 did not have quite as much range as the Dlink! It was close, but noticeably less, maybe 15% or so. It had a lot more features, but ones that, to be honest, most RV'ers would never use. It probably had more than enough range for an RV, but it still made me question whether it was worth the $200 cost. Plus, I realized that with the 1000, I'll have to connect my cell phone, which I'm going to use as a modem, via USB to the 1000. That means that my phone and the 1000 will have to be within USB cable range of each other. What I'm thinking of now is to keep my dlink router, and put it in the rear of the coach. Then, get another device which will connect to the phone via USB, and also connect via ethernet to the dlink router. I'll keep this small "converter" out in the living area where my phone is, and keep the dlink router in the back of the coach with the rest of the technology. Like this: phone/modem ---USB---converter============ethernet=================dlink router The dlink router will convert the signal it receives over ethernet into wifi, so both of us can use it to wirelessly connect to the 'net when we don't have park wifi to use.

RE: Anyone using the cradlepoint mbr 1200 router

Thanks for the fast reply, I like the idea of the free ctr350, making it possible to use the MBR1000 in the RV (mobile office) and the small one in the truck, on the move listening to my favorite radio programs on the internet, using the netbook. I also like the MBR1000 capability to roll over to the aircard when the lan goes down when at the office which seems to happen all too often. I am assuming the MBR1000 is as rugged as the phs300 that I have used for the past 5 years. Putz http://emoticons4u.com/cartoon/1224.gif

RE: Anyone using the cradlepoint mbr 1200 router

OP, Total overkill and a waste of $ for an end user like yourself going with the MBR1200. Reality is you wouldn't even use what an MBR900 or MBR1000 has to offer. Best bet right now, all things considered is the MBR1000 with free CTR350 deal. Easy to sell off the CTR350. Oh........... my guess is a $69+- CTR350 would be all you would ever need. Yes, I have owned an MBR1000, CTR350 and have worked with the MBR900 and MBR1200.

RE: Cradlepoint Router

Clay L and I apparently have similar thoughts on this idea of hard wiring a pricey piece of electronics into a 12v vehicle system. Sure you will get someone here that says just wire it in but reality is you may very well be making a pricey mistake to do so. Sure you can wire it in but is it really a wise move to do so when you take warranty, etc. into consideration. As I stated in my initial post When it comes to hardware I am always concerned about damage, factory warranty, etc. If it were me I would buy the fused 12v Cradlepoint adapter for the MBR1000 for $24.99 which includes shipping to you. Using the factory authorized 12v adapter is cheap insurance lets say in regard to that $180+ router and pricey cellular broadband device you have plugged into the router.

RE: External wifi antenna

I've been using this setup for about a year now with good results. I've created a nice private WiFi hot spot around our motor home. My wife and I can connect to the internet anywhere in our motor home and easily connect while sitting outside our motor home too. We get a good 3G signal using this even when our 3G iPhones can't get a signal. I purchased everything from the 3Gstore Currently we are at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park in Santa Rosa Beach Florida. Here are the results of a speed test I just did.
