RE: Campground near Chicago

Fellow IL campers... I'm wanting to visit some new grounds this year, do any of you have a favorite CG to suggest? Hickory Hollow in Utica, Timberlake Resort in Mt. Carroll - both private campgrounds IMHO the nicest in northern IL. A new campground in progress - Cabin Fever in Victoria, IL near Kewanee. Very nice large sites right on a small stocked lake. No shower house. Favorite State Parks - Mississipppi Palisades SP - Savanna, IL Rock Cut SP in Rockford, Illini SP in Marseilles, Weldon Springs SP in Clinton, IL (we like the lake here because we catch fish)

RE: Happy Acres Wi.

thanks all let the DW read some of these and i think it'll be a no go. and people wonder why i prefer st parks. granted there needs to be rules, but i'm 54, not 14. only been to 1 pvt CG that was like that and that was a long time ago. didn't like it then-probably like it even less now. thanks again We had an unpleasant experience at Happy Acres last year. We called and were told that there were full hook ups. Got there and could not find the sewer-there wasn’t one. The premium, big rig, site we reserved did not have room to park the truck in. The honey wagon guy came and opened the gray and black tank at the same time. It took me several days to get the system functioning correctly again. He wouldn’t dump the galley tank because the valve was under the slide. I prepaid for my daughter and grand kids to come into the park. When they arrived the staff made them pay again. If I could have had my prepaid funds returned I would have left the park the second day. We did leave a day earlier than we paid for. We went to the Illinois Beach State Park and will go there again this year when visiting family in that area. IBSP is probably our fav. we like the road farthest from the lake. most are non drinking sites(keeps the kiddies away) the sites are huge and TT on 1 side of the road don't know where you have to be close to but 2 others that are in the area chain o lakes st park(just north of fox lake)-if you go here and like kids, closeness then honeysuckle is for you. if not try fox den circle. rockcut st park(north side of rockford) we do holiday week ends here so only stay in the reserved area-the other areas-some good-some i wouldn't like but others might so far every IL st park we have stayed at have been well maintained and patrolled pretty regularly- guess we'll see what the budget crunch does to that this yr.

RE: campgrounds 150 miles from Chicago

If you know the Chicago traffic, and you like the Wisconsin and Michigan areas, you have a delema, as you have to transverse the lower part of lake Michigan's roads and interstate roadways. CROWED.. So I would stay either West or East of the lake. We like the state parks in both states, and only require the electrical hook ups. Water, we carry, Sewer, we dump when we exit the park. Rock cut state park just north of Rockford Il is such a park, and we stay there every year, plus you are only about a 2 hrs drive or less to the Dells.

Full Hook-UP CG Close to N. Illinois Still Open?

We are looking for someplace for our last hurrah this fall with full hook-ups to enjoy our new North Trail 31BHD before we winterize. We'd like to stuff one in before Halloween weekend. Any recommendations are appreciated. Within 100+ miles of Rockford, or so, is desired. Most local state parks aren't full hook-ups.

RE: MD to Yellowstone - What to see along the way?

I by-passed Chicago on I-80 and cut back north around Bloomington to pick up I-90. I'm guessing that would be Rockford. Bloomington is several hours south of Chicago along I-74. :) Lots of cheese factories/shops in Wisconsin! Practically every town has one, and there are several along the main roads too.

RE: Michigan 131 or 127

I see your location is NE Indiana. I chose, at random, "Kendalville" as a starting point on Google Maps and the resulting route was to take you up to the Indiana toll road and then west over to 131. That's the route I would take. If you were to take the 127 route you actually end up going pretty far east on I-69 as you head toward Lansing, putting you further from Traverse City. The construction area from Grand Rapids to Rockford is two lanes northbound so traffic usually moves good. We are heading up 131 this Saturday for a camping trip....I'll leave a trail of bread crumbs. ;)

RE: recommend good seasonal campground in northern IL

We drove through Woodhaven Lakes (Sublette, IL) last year. They don't allow golf carts and the place is huge (could be a hike or a car ride to the pool). The lakes are really ponds and don't support much more than fishing (if memory serves). We didn't really like it. Some really nice lots and set ups. . . . and some real dogs that haven't been touched in years. Fossil Lake in Wilmington, IL looked to be more seasonal sites as well. I drove through in April and thought it was a dump. We spend a lot of time at Yogi in Amboy. I have young kids so it works great but it's a Yogi. They have a sizeable season section if this type of a place works for you. I thought Hide-Away Lakes in Yorkville was a dump as well. If you'd be willing to drive 2.5 hours, you might want to look at Rock River Leisure Estates near Edgerton, WI. This is one of the nicest seasonal spots we have seen. It's been a 4-5 years since I made the drive (I am a Plainfield neighbor to the north) but it smooth up Interstate 39/51. Nice pools and it's right off Lake Koshkonong. I hear a high percentage of the resident's here are retirement age or thereabouts. I think there are a couple spots near Rockford that I have yet to fully explore or in Garden Prairie.
