RE: 5 inch thick mattress for older Lance

I guess the Lance 880 uses a short queen and thats why you cant find one ? If you have a full queen 80" i would think the Sacramento area would have a few places to find a mattress that you can actually try out rather than order on-line. I often wonder with all the chemicals they use as fire retardants in foam mattresses, are those chemicals causing us any harm ? After all, we are breathing them in for 8 hrs.a day at close range. I wouldn't be surprised if we find out someday that those chemicals are more deleterious than we are being told. People return foam mattresses because of the chemical odors that just wouldn't air out over time. I would be hesitant ordering anything like that on-line. Try to make it easy on yourself if you do have to return it. Its going to be bad enough just getting the old one out and the new one in .

RE: 5 inch thick mattress for older Lance

We found a 4" memory foam mattress online that was an exact replacement size. As i recall it was an odd size queen. Works great. We probably have the same one Steve and Linda have. To try to extend the old mattress' life, we bought a topper, which made the total thickness impressive, but you kept rolling in and out of the trenches during the night. So, we ditched the old mattress and the topper in favor of the above. It gives us a little more headroom in sleeping cabover. regards, as always, jefe

I moved the cabinet door higher in my Bigfoot so I could put a 1 inch thicker mattress in.

You can buy a 4 in memory foam mattress and then cut it to size. We bought a 4 in. Memory foam California King for our fifth wheel from Overstock.com for $150+- delivered and love it.

RE: 5 inch thick mattress for older Lance

I have a guy over here in Whittier who makes custom mattresses fairly reasonable ... I guess back in the day they used to make allot of rv mattress for trailers and toy haulers... If you want the info send me a pm.... I just referred a couple of friends over for regular home mattresses last year and he made me one special for home... I'm a big guy... Love it love it love it .... lots less than going to any mattress store.... Mike C.

5 inch thick mattress for older Lance

I have a Lance 880 with a 5 inch thick mattress in the loft area. It is the original mattress and is past its useful life. I have looked for a decent replacement on line, but can't find a good 5 inch thick option. I can't go much thicker or my cabinet doors won't open. Has anyone found a decent mattress for this application?

RE: Questions for you money gurus

I'm a money guru in only one sense....we stay out of debt. We don't buy what we can't afford or pay for. This has been our "investing" strategy for a long time and it has worked very well for us. When interest rates rise...so will the cost of everything else (inflation.) ..and, I agree, if someone is relying on 3% interest then they aren't in very good shape. It all boils down to how much risk you want to take with your hard earned savings and how long you want to tie it up. Nothing safe is really paying all that much right now - basically zero. I could care less about the 3% interest. I probably have more than most who post here. I could have picked any rate to ask about, but know we will never see 16% any more. Some people don't seem to realize that this forum is a group of us sitting around a camp fire having a chat! Jack L If you have it like that why don't you just cash out and put it under your mattress. I've yet to post here while camping and sitting around a campfire but have run across some pretty wealthy people while making conversation at different cg's. I say buy the land and bury all your money there!

RE: looking to buy hybrid trailer

Hi Rob, Recently found myself in the same situation as you except my kids are 4 and 1. I ended up finding a near mint condition 2005 Starcraft 18SB for $7k. The big thing for me was finding a camper with NO leaks and this camper is completely leak free. Everything else looks like it was barely used by the previous owners. I looked a few older Rockwood Roos, but both of them had leaked in the bunk ends which left them soft. One of the Roos was so soft that the previous owner was putting down a sheet of plywood to support the mattress!! I ran really fast from that used camper. You should be able to find several that fit your budget and tow vehicle on Craigslist. You just need to take your time and look for one that has no leaks and has been well maintained. They ARE out there! Dont be afraid to look and press on everything to see if its soft from water penetration. Take an especially good look at the roof and make sure that there are no cracks in the caulking or tears in the rubber. Signs that it has had roofing caulking reapplied is a good thing! It means the previous owner kept reapplying as needed to keep the water OUT! Jon

RE: Dealer walk through, what would you do the second time?

Partner this is what we did, I had my dealer have their Lead Mechanic show me how to troubleshoot basic items associated with my particular htt. Now that was as he was also walking me through operator orientation, ie' manual slide crank arm location, H2O filter location, electric tongue lift over ride, does the mattress have heat. Another thing the wife and I did was talk to the parts staff prior to even seeking help with sales department, they know what models are having the costly repairs, recalls, and the sort. Go looking on rain , snow, windy days. This way you can inspect the quality of the equipment.

RE: Questions for you money gurus

I get my interest in my mattress every month. It is always there when I need it or want it. If 3% will make or break you, u are in bad shape anyway.

RE: Lite weight TT that sleeps 10????

How about a Roo 233S. 3 Queen size bunks, couch, and U shape dinette...and worst case, enough room on the floor for an inflatable mattress. http://www.rvwholesalers.com/design/Rockwood_Roo/Rockwood_Roo/233S.gif

RE: Looking for Trailer For Retired Parents

We're close to retirement age and a bathtub is not high on our priority list. Neither is a King bed. Had 2 different 5ers with King's and they are just too hard to make. We much prefer our standard Queen size and there's so many more options for mattress replacement. Some people like a split bath and some like us prefer an enclosed one. Some days, we wish we had a two holer! Our shower seems small occasionally. But there are 48" showers in many of the newer units.

RE: Aerobed or Sleep #??

Did you check that the Sleep# was set to a number other than 0? :B Sure did! I went through the whole demo process. My lower back did not like any setting. The demo salesman was seriously flummoxed... kept telling me that EVERYONE loved this bed!! Ummmm...no. One person sure didn't. I don't remember the last time my low/back right hip hurt. We tried out a "visco foam" mattress yesterday and no problems whatsoever. Not a tempur pedic. The visco foam mattress was really quite comfortable and light weight. If I put a cushy mattress topper on it will be fine for a guest room...or on those nights I can't sleep well. Still looking at Aerobeds though. I've never had a problem sleeping on an air bed. I don't have a clue what the issue was with Sleep # (comfort) beds. cts

Looking for Trailer For Retired Parents

My parents are both retired, so I have been looking at RV's for them. They do most camping in Utah, but want to be able to cruise the South West and North West. The only two specifics I could say I need are king sized bed and a great tub. I figure buying a new mattress wouldn't be that hard. As for the tubs/showers on these trailers, finding something to replicate home is very hard, and I don't think its cheap to put your own in. I have seen a few with decent bathrroms and tub. Honestly the kitchen isn't a big deal let alone the living room areas. Is there any brand that makes great 5th Wheels with awesome bathrooms? That seems to be the most important thing for me, when picking one. I am looking at 5-15k, for something from this Millennium. Since I can't find anything I really like in that price range. So I am looking into brand new for 20k. Is there a certain trailer elderly buy?

RE: Some advice for a newbie RV'er

We are new to RV'ing also. Researched for about 2 years and decided to go new. Many reasons listed here like used mattress didn't appeal to me and maintenance costs start to rise and finally don't buy anything that was used as a rental unit as you never know how the renters drove the rig. We have just begun our adventures and are looking forward to many years of trips across North America.

RE: Some advice for a newbie RV'er

Is the 2003 Coachman going to be paid for in cash? No financing? Can you afford to repair things afterwards? It will be a gamble no matter what. Are you capable of doing repairs yourself and save money? Do you have the time and feel ok if you break down somewhere and might not be able to go anywhere for a couple days? The reason I ask these type of questions is because my answer to them all was no...lol I'm not a mechanically inclined person. I can do some things and I learn more and more as time goes by, but I don't wanna take that risk. I have a kid as well and I don't want to be put in a predictament that could end up being dangerous. I also have limited time off, so a delay for me would be a big problem. Still could happen, but I would like to at least try to avoid it right off the bat. Another reason for us choosing new is sanitation reasons. We don't buy used furniture. I wouldn't buy a used mattress to sleep on. Or I guess I should actually say we can afford to not have to do that. Nothing against those who can only afford things that way. I like having a warranty. I like having peace of mind. If I'm worried on a trip that something might break, then I will not enjoy the trip at all. I will constantly be watching it and not the scenery.

RE: Aerobed or Sleep #??

Just went to a Sleep # Store and that mattress demo really hurt my back!! Wow!!!:E Apparently I'm one of the few that Sleep# beds do not work for. Drinking a beer right now to settle the hip down.:B I'm thinking the next thing to do is check out Aerobeds. That 18 yr old bed was probably NOT made in China. On the Costco/BB&B/Aerobed website reviews are pretty consistent with leaks and the controls not working. Could be the luck of the draw... but still worth checking into. cts

RE: Aerobed or Sleep #??

I've owned both, but can tell you that the Sleep# are durable in my opinion. I found out recently when I did a really dumb thing. I inadvertently set my tablet on top the Sleep# controls, which basically pressed the inflation button. My pump is under the Sleep# mattress, and makes a sound similar to a muffled leaf blower. Which is what I actually thought it was as my neighbor was doing yard work. Basically, walked away and left it that way for nearly 2 hours. Eventually, couldn't figure out what was taking my neighbor so long with his yard, and heard this thump. Went to investigate, and discovered the over inflated Sleep# bed. They must have a pressure relief valve installed, but thought I may have essentially burned out the motor? But ended up being nothing. Works normally with no issues.
