I was wondering how many of you cook your meals outside in a camp dutch oven? I got into this hobby a few months ago. Started with one oven, now I have three and all of the paraphernalia that goes along with this style of cooking.

The dishes I have prepared so far have all been delicious and for some reason I really enjoy cooking them. I have absolutly no interest in doing any of the other cooking around my home or camp. A few times I have set everything up in the back yard and cooked meals.

The accessory that I couldn't be without is my dutch oven cook table. Don't like having to get on my knees to arrange or add charcoal.

Cooking in dutch ovens is a lot of work though, cureing the ovens and cleaning and oiling after use but the results make it worth the effort.

What is your favorite dish that you have prepared in one?

flatpicker, I have enjoyed dutch oven cooking in camp for years. the dutch ovens give me an excuse to spend more time outdoors. I don't find that they take anymore clean-up effort than my coleman "grill to go" , but they are cumbersome to pack. I have a killer recipe for baked beans that never fails to collect compliments. I hesitate to give out the recipe because for some reason, when I tell people how much brown sugar it takes they think I'm kidding (never mind the bourbon)

Use our dutch on nearly every trip, but it is only to make one thing - the popular fruit "dump" cake. I've gotten kinda bored with it even with changing the fruit or cake mix, but the wife requires it be made and I am smart enough to comply.

do anything in it. Any old recipe can be made in it. I like to make lasagna. Just break up the noodles, uncooked, and layer all your ingredients like you normally would. Add about an extra 1/2 cup water, and cook with coals on top and bottom.

I have also made chili and baked a corn bread crust on top when chili was done-- just add more coals to top.

We use our big deep one as an actual oven quite a lot. with a trivet rack in the bottom and cake/pie/whatever pans resting on them the cast iron makes a really nice oven. Back before "ovens" were a commn thing in trailers we'd surprised someone with a fresh baked birthday cake at the camp gound and it would be the talk of the weekend.

Another attention getting we use occassionally is a hugh mutlistack of DO's all cooking away, sometimes stacked 5 high.
Of course you have to plan what goes in what oven as it's not to simple to stir the contents of the bottom oven.

The largest collection of DO's we've had going at one time was 24 at a group campout someplace in Penn. Not all were "cooking" some where just set on top for warming up contents, but it was an amazing sight and I think we went through over a 100 pounds of charcoal that day.
Our main problem wasn't cooking but serving. We figured all the DO's and contents weighed in at around a 1000 pounds, and we had trouble finding enough sturdy tables to set them all out come dinner time.

I inherited my Dutch Oven from a very dear friend. I just recently started using it in my home oven.

Have you visited this site? Lots of recipes & info about DO.

http://www.castirontrader.com/free_recipe.html

My favorite recipe so far is Barbecued Pork for Sandwiches

2 lbs country style pork spare ribs
1 bottle of your favorite BBQ sauce
1 package of your favorite sandwich rolls

Place ribs in cold DO. Pour sauce over ribs, turn to coat thoroughly. Cover. Place DO in oven then set oven to 300 degrees. Cook for @ 2-2.5 hours. Meat should shred easily with two forks.

After shredding meat, mix thoroughly with BBQ sauce and replace cover. Let stand for @ 5 minutes. Spoon onto roll to serve.

Thanks for the links flatpicker, always looking for new ideas for my Dutch!
I'd also like to thank you for reminding me - I forgot to clean a Dutch after last trip. Things got a little hectic after dinner(it was Halloween)and I completely forgot to clean the Dutch with the remnents of the dump cake. Didn't find out till we were leaving, I swore as soon as we got home I'd clean it.
Apparently I'm getting forgetfull...it cleaned up today rather well though!

I have 3 dutch ovens and frequently cook in all three. I am going to order a Maca 15 inch before I get too much older to supplement all that Lodge Iron. (Only I and a few of the chosen will know what a magical cooking utensil I will then possess.)

I use the outside shower to clean up the ovens after removing any goodies remaining inside. I also heat the iron over a gas burner to dry it out, and I don't usually oil them between uses as it might go rancid. Sometimes they might need it.

I like the dutch oven cooking table, but it weighs 70 pounds. I use a large stainless steel griddle placed on the grill of my two burner camp chef stove for a cooking surface, and I keep the charcoal going in a small Weber. I also use a tripod over the fire pit if I am feeling particularly rustic. And if I feel really adventurous, I might just cook in the fire pit with real wood coals and such.

My partner is an invaluable member of the dutch oven cooking team, and she does all of the prep work except for the rough stuff like carrying out the ovens. What a wonderful woman to have around.

Sometimes in the winter around these parts, I use the ovens in the fireplace and they work just fine there as well. It is a good place to try out new recipes while waiting for spring.

One of my favorite dishes is a half dozen Cornish Hens, (small chickens is what they are), caraway seed, one can of chicken broth in a deep 14 inch, on either a trivet or on slices of spicy beef jerky on the bottom. A good main dish for a crowd.

I really like cooking in a dutch oven, and I like to make converts to the art.

Hi Flatpicker,

We just moved from tent camping to an RV and still cook all of our meals in a dutch oven. We do use the stove top for coffee but don't use it or the oven for anything else.
