Just sitting around thinking about what to bring on our first weekend out and thought about these little treats.

For those not familiar with Campfire Banana Splits, you'll need:
Bananas, one pp, slightly under ripe is best
mini marshmallows or regular cut up
Hershey's Chocolate bar(s)or if you are feeling special, Dove dark chocolate
walnuts or pecans broken up (optional)

Split open the banana lenghtwise, through the skin on top but leave the bottom uncut.
Between the split banana add a sprinkling of the other ingredients
Wrap in foil and put in the hot coals for about 15 minutes, more or less until everything melts. Peel back the foil & enjoy. Careful.....VERY HOT!!!!

Gads, I can feel the pounds adding on just reading that recipe. I'm going to have to make those just once.

Thanks, I think.

We had a similar treat as a kid.

I think I'll surpise my kids this weekend... too bad they don't like chocolate!

We made these when I was 11 years old, in Camp Aya-Po in Kentucky. We called them banana boats.
That was in 1952...and they were just as good then.

Try this one after the banana splits. Core 1 apple (per person) while leaving it whole. Place 1 tsp sugar, 1 tsp butter, and 5 or 6 red hots candy in the hole of the apple. Wrap in foil. Place wrapped apple into hot coals and cook until apple is done. Baking time varies with the variety of the apple but is usually 10-15 minutes. Apple may be tested for doneness by poking it with a fork. You will enjoy this one.

Now we're cookin'

I realize the Banana Splits are an old Girl Scout thing but I guess we now know how many of us are/were old Girl Scouts!

I barely remember making these in Girl Scouts, but I know we did.
But, I think in our version, we made them with peanut butter and chocolate chips in the middle of the banana.
Any one else remember doing this?
What do you do with the part of the banana that you scoop out? do you pack it back on top of the added ingredients or do you just eat the scooped out part?
Is 15 mins the usual on the grill?

You don't scoop it out, you only cut through the banana lenghtwise and open it up and put the goodies inside. The 15 minutes is variable, that's usually what it takes with the packages in the hot coals at the edge of the campfire. On a grill I would imagine it would take a lot longer. You can always open one up and check, if they're not ready put 'em back. I love the peanut butter idea, I'm trying that this weekend!
