Quote: Now, the that ratios have no effect on how much force pinion bearings need to withstand. However, the diameter of ring gear has a huge effect. You can have two differentials with a ratio of 3.36, but one with a 8-inch ring gear and one with a 9-inch ring gear. Torque is force multiplied by the diameter. So picking the Titan's peak torque in fourth (direct) gear the driveline torque should be around 380lb-ft of torque.
380lb-ft/8-in=380lb-ft/(2/3ft)=570lb
-or-
380lb-ft/9-in=380lb-ft/(3/4ft)=507lb
Just one inch of diameter makes a large difference in how much force the pinion bearings need to withstand. This is why ring gears increase in diameter with increasing loads. I suspect that Nissan chose to use axles in the range of 8.5 inches in diameter. Just a hunch, as I couldn't verify this.
Good math. The Titan uses an 8.89" ring in the diff.

Wow you guys are relly into this stuff, thanks for the info. So in effect a bigger ring is better for towing applications?

Yes.
The Titan is engineered very well - it definitely has an adequate rear end for it's ratings. It's not monstrous, but it's bigger than they needed to make it.
I'm not sure why your rear diff failed, but I don't think it's a design issue.
Has the dealership told why/how the differential failed?

I think Nissan should have really beefed things before they bumped up the tow rating on the Titan. My son is parts manager at a nissan dealer and says the biggest problem they have seen is with the brake wear.

I don't know if the Titan is junk; everybody turns out a bad part now and then. I do know you'll rarely go wrong by not buying anything the first year it is introduced.

I'm really surprised at those rear diff specs on the Titan.... For a rig that's rated to tow over #2000 more then my F150, I'm glad my F150 has a 9.75" rear and hold 3 qts of 75w140 synthetic lube......
I think I also remember hearing on a commercial that they also have 33" tall tires?? Won't that make the effective gear ratio even lower, numerically?
I like my 1:1 third gear turing a 3.55 ratio and 31" tires.....

Sorry to hear about your loss...
I too have a TITAN and have towed extensively with no problems....in fact it tows way better than my 1 Ton Chevy Van with 454 ever did...I did however do the proper 500 mile break in before even hooking up my trailer and then drove as close to another 500 miles with my trailer attached (3,000 to 4,000 lbs) at under 55 MPH as recommended for towing break-in....maybe you just got a truck that wasn't PDI'd correctly or, came off the assembly line without lubrication. However, I dont like hearing about the service problem you had....Your story sure makes that old addage "when it rains it pours" come true.
Love my Titan

Did you miss the fact that his first Titan was purchased back by Nissan and this is his SECOND truck? He must have had your now and then in his two trucks.
From the original post:
Quote: P.S.S. This is my second Titan, the first the dealer bought back do to bad wiring and tranny.
I too feel for your loss desertfam. Don't let the truck discourage you from camping. Get Nissan to buy this one back and compensate you. Then go buy another brand of truck. I do agree with jnclement I try to stay away from the first year of anything too.
