Just got an e-mail I thought may be of interest to those of you who "swiff" and have pets. "I recently had a neighbor who had to have their 5-year old German Shepherd dog put down due to liver failure. The dog was completely healthy until a few weeks ago, so they had necropsdy done to see what the cause was. The liver levels were unbelievable, as if the dog had ingested poison of some kind. The dog is kept inside, and when he's outside, someone's with hime, so the idea of him getting into something unknown was hard to believe. My neighbor started going through all the items in the house. When he got to the Swiffer Wetjet, he noticed, in very tiny print, a warning which stated 'may be harmful to small children and animals'. He called the company to ask what the contents of the cleaning agent are and waqs astounded to find out that antifreeze is one of the ingredients, (actually he was told it is a commpound which is one molecule away from antifreeze). Therefore, just by the dog walking on the floor cleaned with th4e solution, then licking it's own paws, and the dog eating from its dishes which were kept on the kitchen floor cleaned with this product, it ingested enought of the soluttion to destroy its liver. Soon after his dog's death, his housekeepers two cats also died of liver failure. They both used the Swiffer Wetjet for quick cleanups on their floors. Necropsies weren't done on the cats, so they couldn't file a sawsuite, but he asked that we spread the word to as many people as possible so they don'[t lose their animals." This message appeared to have been forwarded several times before it reached me so I don't know where it originated nor do I know exactly how factual it is but for those who use the swiffer wetjet in their homes or RVs AND have pets or small children it may be something worth looking into.

It is a myth - another "urban legend". It has already been discussed here.

This sounds like one of those urban legend stories.

I too have to add this to the "Mythbusters" to-do list. My wife is crazy with her Swiffer and out Lab's bowls are on the kitchen floor too. He has never shown any negative symptoms.

Can someone explain why it's an "urban legend"? I've never heard of this before, we have laminite flooring, and use the swiffer jet for cleaning the floors.

thanks..

"Urban legend" because it has been proven to be not true - or at least no solid proof has yet been put forward.

Because the whole notion of this problem came from some urban household and not a creditible lab or vet it is considered a legend - like the story about the guy who set his cruise control in his Winnie and went to make coffee. He sues for millions after the "crash" because he thought it was an autopilot. The problem is no one can find a record of any such lawsuit or settlement. The story was made up.

In another thread a couple of days ago the specifics were given about who investigated it and what the manufacturer states on their website regarding pets in response to this claim.

colbee,

maybe if you reply to the person who sent it to you with a link to the urban legends website and ask him to send it back to the person who sent it to him you can reverse the effect of this nasty rumor. Just think, if everyone who forwarded this rumor would just forward the truth...........nahhh, just delete this stuff next time. Or save it in the folder where you keep the Nigerian lottery emails.
