From the Chicago Cullinary Arts Institute.

Basic French Toast and Variations:
Heat in heavy skillet, 1 tbs. butter or margarine.

Mix together, 2 eggs, slightly beaten, or the equivalent of your favorite egg substitute, 1 cup milk, 1/4 tsp. salt.

Dip into this mixture, 6 slices bread.

Add 2 of the slices to the hot butter at a time. Lightly brown on both sides. Add more butter if necessary to keep slices from sticking.

Serve with jam, jelly, maple syrup or honey, sprinkle with sugar & cinnamon, or garnish with tiny sausages.

Or toast may also be placed on a greased baking sheet and browned in a 450 degreeF oven for about 10 mins. for each side.

Now for the variations:

-for Sweet French Toast, follow the above recipe and add 2 tbs. sugar and 1/2 tsp. almond extract or 1 tsp. vanilla extract to the egg-milk mixture.

-for Orange French Toast, follow the above recipe and substitute orange juice for the milk. Blend and mix 3 tbs. confectioner's sugar and 2 tsp. grated orange peal into the egg-orange juice mixture.

-for Peanut Butter French Toast, follow the above recipe but gradually beat the milk into 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter, omit salt, then add eggs to the milk-peanut butter mixture.

-for Buttermilk French Toast, follow the above recipe and substitute buttermilk for the milk.

Substitute Kings Hawaiian bread cut into 1" slices and follow any recipe. It makes the best french toast.

How about putting cream cheese and orange marmalade in between two pieces of bread then putting the "sandwitch" in the egg mix and then grill?

Here's how a “Real Full-Timer” makes French Toast. {grin}

“Orson, pack up all your toys. We have to drive to Vermont and get some fresh maple syrup.” A few days later, it is, “Orson pack up all your toys, we need to drive to N'awlins to buy some vanilla.” Shortly thereafter, it is, “Orson herd a few chickens over to the side of the coach.”

“Okay ladies, give me a few good ones...”, the chickens produce as induced and I give them the corn – did I forget the trip to Nebraska for the corn? What is still missing? Oh yeah, “Orson, herd a couple of cows to the side of the coach.”

Then I pull out my trusty KitchenAid mixer and make a couple of loaves of bread. Then, I do exactly what everyone else has said. LOL.

I actually got the idea when reading a cookbook I inherited from my grandmother. The recipe for roasted chicken was amazing. “First, catch a chicken... I'll spare you the details of what to do with the chicken, after it was caught, but suffice it to say that it ended up in a roaster pan. I doubt that many of us who has not lived on a farm would enjoy that part.

Okay, here is what I do – for real. I time the French Toast to when I am baking bread. I almost always bake two loaves. One is jalapeno cheese bread, and the other is cinnemon bread. Both come from the same dough, but are quite different.

I like to make French Toast with fresh cinnemon bread. As above, almost all else is the same as the recommendations. Oh, by the way, since you can buy frozen loaves at most grocery stores, it is very easy to make “home-made” cinnemon bread or jalapeno cheese bread. Just thaw the dough, let it rise, roll it out and add the “stuff”, roll it back up and shove it in a bread pan and voila! It really is incredibly easy.

Anyhow, I hope you enjoyed my joke.

But yes, Orson really does gather his toy and put them away, when it is time to go. He also diggs up all the burried treasures, such as pig's ears, dips them into his outside water dish and brings them along too. I am aware of this and intercept and put each into a "baggie" before it goes into his toybox.

Then we do the "patrol", where Orson takes me to each spot in the campsite that needs to be cleaned up. Mostly, he is just making sure that his "business" was always in the defined area, but he finds trash from neighboring kids too. We clean up after ourselves.

He expects quid pro quo, and he gets it. When he gets low on his food, I find out where we need to drive to get more. I make a call and that pet food store is usually very happy to know that Orson and I are coming to buy 90+ pounds of food. Oh, and French Toast is perfectly fine for dogs. He deserves that, after all of that running around the country...

Make a sandwich of either crunchy or creamy peanut butter, then dip in egg mixture and brown. Excellent!
