We are looking at buying our first tt, it's a 92 Jayco and there seems to be a problem with the fridge. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what size fridge are usually in these things and how much they are to replace. Can I buy just a regular compact fridge from Sears or does it have to be a "trailer" fridge?

I would replace the fridge with an RV model for sure. Almost all RV units are designed to run on propane as well as electric. You definately would want the propane option even if you don't plan on camping without electric hookups because running the fridge on LP will keep your food cold while driving. Anyways, I'm looking at the latest Camping World catalog, and it looks like they run anywhere from $440 to $2800 depending on size, etc. A thing to remember, too, is that RV units take a few hours to cool down and they don't make any noise when running, they don't use a compressor like home units... so make sure there's something wrong with it for sure before you rip it out!

Generally speaking they are usually either 6 cubic feet ot 8 cubic feet although there are other sizes but those are the two most popular sizes...

If the frige isn't working I would make sure the "deal" compensates you for that as RV refrigerators are PROHIBITIVELY expensive!!!
Expect to pay about $1200 or more for a new one and perhaps 1/2 that if your going to have the other repaired...

You could use a home type frige but it would only be powered when you were plugged into shore power... The RV frige is usually a 2 way or 3 way and are capable of running on propane or 120 volts AC and in the case of the 3 way also on 12 volts DC...

Best Regards,
Les

Most TT have a 6 cubic foot refrigerator and some will be larger. They are quite expensive to replace and will range from $600 - $900 just for the refrigerator. There are places that sell salvaged units for much less.

Some people do put in small refrigerators rather than a rv type. The biggest drawback is that they need 120V to operate while the rv type also use propane and do not require 120V. Another problem is finding one to fit the opening.

What brand and model of refrigerator is it. If it is a Dometic it could possibly be something as simple as a control board. I would check it out before scrapping it, could be an inexpensive repair.

I have a 1991 Jayco and it has a Norcold model 452 ( 5 cu.ft.) reefer in it. It is a good reefer. I did recently have a problem with it, but - thanks to the people here - I easily and painlessly fixed it. Also a number of Norcold reefers are currently under recall. Ours is scheduled for work at our local RV dealer at Norcold's expense. http://www.norcold.com/recalls.cfm

The reefer might not actually have to be replaced, but just subject to a minor repair.

If the reefer does need to be replaced, rebuilt reefers are also an option. At one site I came across in California, a rebuilt 452 runs $475 and has a warranty that is as good as a new one.

I was told that it could be a control board, but the people are dealing with, (A camp, that has an "rv sales" lot), have yet to respond to a cost as to how much the board could cost to replace. They are suppose to do labor without cost. Do you have any idea how much a control board would run? - Thank you for your feedback. I did not think of the problem of 120V, and not being able to run the fridge while traveling.
