Hubby wants a 2004 Silverado9 2500 HD Crew Cab Standard Box 4WD Duramax Diesel 6600 V8. LT model His first diesel, MSRP 47,540.00. Is 42,000 a fair price? His thinking is it won't be any cheaper, good rebates available. It will cost more in a few years. He will retire in 4-5 yrs and want it paid for by then. It won't be towing till then, unless our situation at present changes. What do you think? Should we buy now?

I hate to be negative but that sounds like it is too high to me.
I also question buying a truck that you don't need for 4 years. I would make the payments to a savings account and buy a new truck in 2008 when you need it. Sure they might go up in price but alot of things can change in 4 years. The trucks are getting better every year as far as towing so I would wait.
If he is sure he wants one now I would also look at other brands. I have a 2004 Dodge with a Cummins diesel loaded with everything including leather seats and paid around $30,000 for it. It is my first Dodge and I love it. I bought it because I have had great luck with Cummins engines and I am not sorry.

thanks for your thoughts, the 42,000 is what edmunds says is a TMV rebates would bring it down to 39,000. Another question if I may ask, does it matter that it wouldnt be used for towing till later, what about the breaking in of the engine? I would only be putting about 5,000 miles a year on it. Drove a Dodge last year, he likes the way the chev drove better, might have bought it then, but that instrument panel had white behind the gauges, didn't like the way it looked. We both agreed on that.

No it wouldn't matter if you don't tow with it. Break in is only 5,000 miles so you would be in good shape there. My only point in waiting is that all the trucks are changing so much each year that you might wish you had a new one when you start towing.

Price seems high and it might pay to do some shopping around. I know you can buy a Ford Super Duty for much less depending on options. Also, if you're not for certain which trailer you'll be buying in 4-5 years, you might consider the 1 ton 3500 series. Better GVW ratings for pulling TT's or 5vr's. A 2500 will impose lower weight limits. Understand that the truck you buy now will not have all the neat options, fuel economy and horsepower you'll get in 4-5 years.

If anyone is looking to purchase a new vehicle, I highly recommend you look up the following company, Fighting Change or the web site is http://www.fightingchance.com .

Fighting Change company will show you all hidden cost of each item the dealers charges for. The instructions show how to write a proposal letter to send to area dealers and get prices back without leaving your house, plus much more. The complete proposal letter to send out for quotes and give to local dealers, showing all dealers that you really done your home work and know all about rebates, a complete listing of all options and much more that really sits the salesman back in their chairs.

By following the instructions on how to purchase and new vehicle I purchased a new 1999 Dodge Cummins Diesel 2500 SLT Quid-Cab 2 wheel drive that is fully loaded, leather and automatic transmission for $29,000.00 in the year 1999. This truck was listed for $38,400.00. Most dealers around Oregon, Washington and Idaho answered my written proposal and quoted me a price of approximately $32,000 to $33,000.00.

After walking out of the local dealer’s office one day after the sales manager got mad at my written proposal, the salesman who first showed me the truck called me twice that afternoon at my home and lowered the truck price to $29,000.00.

I was able to bet the famous low price dealers cost from Kellogg, Idaho you all might have heard about. I think the name of the Dealer is Dick's Chevy-Dodge. Most dealers hate the guy in northern Idaho because he usually bets out most all other dealers prices by thousands.

PS: I found out through Fighting Change if a dealer sells a vehicle to you at cost; the dealer is still making approximately $1000.00 from the truck manufacture company for moving to vehicle. Dealers never loss money for saling a car or truck at cost.

I agree you can get more than $5k off the MSRP- do a little more shopping. Just today news storys about GM having too much inventory are out- you can get a better deal.

I disagree with the majority, the only reason for buying now is that he wants it. The argument that it would be paid for by the time you need it is fallacious, it will be a 4 yr old truck and old technology by the time it is put to work. The way these trucks have been advanced in the past four yrs proves it. There was no Duramax/Allison or 6.0 PS w tow haul trans or 5.9 HO w 600 ft pounds of torque and look at the increases in GVW and GCVW. Although I do not follow all the proposed advances it has been noted that Ford is doing a major engineering change for 05 which makes their own 4 yr old trucks obsolete and no doubt Dodge and Chevy/GM have their own plans for meeting or exceeding these advances. Purchase what will serve you now and save the difference then when needed trade and add the cash saved and get the benefit of improved technology

If hubby is the type that always wants the latest/greatest to come out, then I would wait. However, if that is not the case, then contrary to another post, the Chev Duramax will always be a great truck, regardless of the advances made in the next 4 years. This is true of Ford and Dodge as well. There are thousands of RVr's enjoying their travels in equipment from the 80's-90's. The new models will only go up in price....also, you should be able to trim at least $2000 off the $42,000, or have them throw in a long-term GM bumper to bumper warranty.
