HI
I am new here and new to Rv's in general.I recently picked up a 1979 Dodge Sportsman Tioga.I have been working on it the past couple of weeks.We took our maiden voyage with it yesterday and what a great time we had.
I have a few things on my yet to be fixed list and I am hoping that some veteran Dodge folks can point me in the correct direction.
I am having a somewhat hard time getting correct automotive parts.This is because no one knows what a 440 industrial is and or how to look up parts for it.Maybe I missed it but I can't seem to find the model # for this vehicle.
I would also like to hear what kind of mileage you are getting with the 440-3 and at what cruising speed.

Post up your VIN# and someone here will decode it for you (whichever one of us gets to it first). We don't need the last few numbers.
Where in the US are you? Plenty of local parts houses will have the correct books to look in (no, the computer will not help them).

I have quite a few applicable CarQuest catalogs, saved when the company said throw them away, as well as more at work. I also know a lot of the tricks for finding hard to find parts. If you don't have a CarQuest nearby, or prefer a different parts supplier, the part numbers I can supply can be crossed over using parts interchange systems.
The VIN, especially on 1970 and newer vehicles, has things like model year, model designation, original engine, etc., encoded in it so Leeann is right. Sometimes you run into split year motorhomes or motorhomes where the coach manufacturer used their own VIN instead of the Dodge chassis VIN. If in doubt, the chassis VIN is stamped into the outside of the frame near the front wheels.
1970 Explorer Class A on a 1969 Dodge M300 chassis with 318 cu. in. (split year)
1972 Executive Class A on a Dodge M375 chassis with 413 cu. in.
1973 Explorer Class A on a Dodge RM350 (R4) chassis ... no engine or tranny (yet)

Thank you Leeann this will be a big help.I guess I will start making an old fashioned book out of all this info.That way my kids or the next owner will have a head start.When people have a great resource to fall back on giving them part #'s and such it makes life so much easier.

That means it'll be a bit more of an "adventure" finding parts but is still very doable. I've managed to find a lot of obscure parts for my '73 RN-350 chassis and listings for parts for my '72 M-375 chassis.
Most of the catalogs I've 'saved' from work are for medium-duty trucks, such as yours.
Something that will help is to try to get a copy of the original Dodge parts catalog for your chassis. In many cases, I've found parts by running the OEM part number through the parts interchange. Likewise, casting and tag numbers help a lot in tracking down obscure parts.
BTW - the main difference between 'industrial' and 'standard' Dodge engines is a forged steel crankshaft instead of the standard cast steel crank ... which is why motorhome engines are so popular with racers.

A few years back a few people started a wikipedia but real-life demands got in the way.
The wiki still exists, such as it is. What's needed is people willing to spend the time and effort to collect, organize, and edit the information. In particular, we need someone to oversee and manage the effort.
The wiki is an offshoot (add-on/subdomain) of my personal domain.
Leeann already helps with (and is sometimes overwhelmed by) a related forum.
