We have heard so much about cooking a chicken this way so we are trying it,its been on the grill almost 2 hrs, brought it in and pink juices are still dripping! How long does it take for these things to cook? Tom said it isn't worth the gas to cook it for this long. How much longer? We are getting hungry! Thanks!

Not sure how your cooking them, but on our Weber we cook two chickens usually in one hour and 45 minutes, sometimes as long as two hours, but never longer. This is at home, we don't have the means to properly cook whole chickens on the road.

I have three burners on our grill which I'll call top, middle and bottom. I leave the top and bottom on Medium and the middle one is turned off, and the cover remained's closed the entire time, no taking peeks.

Good luck, I think you'll find it quite tasty.

I do beercan chicken often and I've never cooked over 2 hours. I'm over the grill with the lid on as well. Most important IMHO is the constant temperature. I pre-heat the bbq on high then once I hear the juices splashing, I turn it down to medium. Keep the lid on without looking to maintain the temp.
Also only use 1/2 can of beer. Save the other half for yourself!

On a Holland grill you have only two settings flame or no flame. It take a little longer to cook on this grill but two hours is too long to wait,, we got to eat the chicken at 8:30 pm and it was not all that great. It reminded me of the chicken we had at Frankenmuth,,kinda bland, not much taste..maybe we did something wrong.

Dianne and Tom, I don't think you did anything wrong. I cooked it once on my large grill with the half can of beer. It took at least 2 hours, I don't remember for sure now. It was real bland, I could have got the same taste if I'd cooked it in the crockpot with no seasonings. Never fixed it again. Don't miss it much either!

Go to grocery store. Buy cooked rotisserie chicken(s)Our stores carry a variety of flavors. Put in fridge. Take out 1/2 hour or so before dinner and do your beer can thing or warm up as required.

Good BBQ takes a while to cook. Slow is good and beer can chicken is good, but it does take 2-3 hours most of the time.

When I do beer butt chicken I do it in my Weber Kettle grill over off set charcoal(coal to the side andf nothing in the middle). I season the chicken with garlic, salt, pepper, chili powder, and a few others. 2 hours max and the meat is tasty, juicey and falls off the bone. I never tried it on my gas grill as I'm sure it wouldn't be as good.
