I'm looking for a nice campground in the Houghton/Higgins Lake area. We would want a full hook up site with a pool for the kids. Any recommendation would be appreciated.

We are planning on spending Memorial Day weekend 2005 there. Any suggestion on what to do in the area?

I'm a native Michigander, now in southeast PA. Houghton/Higgins Lake area has some nice trout fishing streams less than an hour's drive. Can't recommend a full hookup campground, but there are a couple of nice state parks in the area. http://www.michigan.gov/dnr

The two lakes themselves have good fishing. Houghton has pike/walleye/bluegill/smallmouth. Higgins is deeper and has trout and perch. Might try a web search to look for a boat rental.

Keep in mind that in mid-northern Michigan the weather can still be downright cold as late as Memorial Day.

If you don't mind being a little north of the Higgins Lake area then Hartwick Pines State Park in Grayling might work for you. One of the only state parks with full hook ups. A short drive to Higgins Lake from there. Whatever you do make your res ASAP and as stated before, be ready for any kind of weather.

Being a former Yooper & MTU grad, when I read "Houghton/Higgins Lake" area I think to myself "Wow, that's a lot of square miles"!

I have camped at Hartwick Pines; it is a nice SP. So is Higgins Lake (but I have only visited there, not camped). As I recall, they are only 20 - 30 minutes apart.

Good luck!

There is a state park a few hundred yards east of my cabin on Higgins Lake. Don't believe you will find full hook ups unless you go to some private camp ground.
Since building 1937-38, the township of Lyons Manor has expanded to include my cabin, and I can no longer take/leave my MH there. Grayling, a few miles north of Higgins Lake has an RV park.
Higgins Lake is a spring feed lake with no inlet, except springs, and as such is a very cold water lake. Clearer than most drinking water. You can see the bottom in 30 feet or more of water. As a kid it was fine but these many years later, my legs turn blue. Houghton Lake is a shallow lake and not very clear water, but good fishing.
Trout fishing is best in the Au Suable river, with it's head water in Grayling. Take a canoe trip down the river. Very reasonable. In fact I rent a canoe from them on a weekly rate instead of carrying one to lake.

As you can see I relocated after WW11 a long way from there and don't get up that way to much these days.

I agree with lcruzen Hartwick Pines State Park in Grayling is a great park!! If you elect to go to a Michigan State park on a Memorial Day weekend I would reserve your site now, they fill up almost 6 months in advance. Good luck.
