The double cab is much like the other V8 Tundras except heavier.

Generally, 5000-5500# is a prudent max weight for a trailer for these trucks. I know, the so-called Tow Rating is much higher, but the real tow rating is the GCWR. That's easily exceeded for just about all tow vehicles except maybe 1-ton duallys if the truck is normally loaded with personal stuff and people.

The engine is willing if you let it rev. Tundras make a good tow vehicle for trailers where the weight suits the truck.

All men over age 50 should get an annual PSA blood test. Mine had a low reading, but the yearly jump was significant. The biopsy showed cancer just entering the aggressive stage. Dr. Hackenslash removed it.

The 4.7L engine in these Toyota's do not mind the high RPM's and will pull very well. As Ken mentioned, keep it around 5000lbs, or at most under 6000lbs. Our KZ weighs 4800 dry and does remarkably well, but I have no plans to take it through the mountains. Keep the fluids changed at their scheduled intervals and you will have some great experiences out on the road.

p220sigman, I've got a '04 doublecab, same engine (the 4.7L with the 4.10 rear end). Although I believe the '05 turns out a few more HP. I tow a 28' TT with it and get about 10-12 MPG. I don't break any land speed records, but it does pretty good. Trailer is about 5k lbs.

The double cab is taller/wider/longer than the regular Tundra's. You will find that from the rear seat forward is just like the Sequoia. Its basically a Sequoia with a truck bed instead of a 3rd row.

I believe Toyota is coming out with a 3/4 ton diesel for either the 2007 or 2008 model year.

I have an 04 Tundra Double Cab (2wd) and I am presently considering the Jayco 27BH (@4950 lbs.) I plan on taking it frequently to the mountains of westen nc and beaches. What advice would you folks give me? Go smaller, or can my Tundra COMFORTABLY handle this? Thanks in advance.

"Comfortable" is a relative term, and one not easily defined. Each person seems to think it means something else, so that's a tough one to call.

All tow vehicles, including diesels, are affected by altitude. Get high enough up in the mountains and all trucks/SUV's will struggle with a load (or at least become noticeably less responsive). That's the nature of the beast.

If the Toyota's tow rating is 6K then 5K is about what the trailers UVW should be anyway, because by the time you load up people and gear into the truck, and supplies into the trailer, you'll have a lot less "extra" towing capacity then the 1K you had originally. And the closer you get to the max towing capacity the more you'll notice it, hills or no hills.
