I am with Farmers Insurance group and pay about 16.00 every 6 months for 21k value. On or off the truck. Also includes PIP if someoe is hurt in the camper, also includes uninsured motorist coverage on or off the truck.
Homeowners covers the contents, fishing poles, dishes, bedding etc if there is a fire theft etc.....
I have State Farm and they told me that my truck Ins covers it while on the truck and that my Homeowner policy covers it when it is off the truck. They said it is covered while off the truck, either in my RV/Boat building, in my driveway, or if I have it off the truck on the ground at a campground or anywhere else. I couldn,t believe I could have that kind of good luck and called two other State Farm agents to see if that was true. They said my agent was correct! No extra money due for insuring my Camper! What a deal!!
We use USAA Federal Savings Bank for all banking and insurance needs. Ther is no additonal cost on my truck for full coverage on the camper (an or off the truck). They added it as a rider, but they don't charge any additional. And, USAA has the lowest rate I could find when I bought the new truck.
HOWEVER... you must be affiliated with the military to use USAA

I also have a rider with my car insurance for damage to the camper itself but what about protection for breakdowns and repair for all the appliances. I'm looking at Good Sam's CSP coverage. Anyone use that plan?
Quote: I'm with State Farm. No extra charge for me. It is covered by my Auto when it is on the truck, and homeowner's when it is parked. I questioned it, because it was an almost $20k purchase, but they said it was all good.
They really are like a good neighbor!
I'm in the same boat here. No charge. It is covered with my auto insurance when on the truck and home owners off. I'm with USAA.

I just bought a used truck camper this weekend and checked with my State Farm agent to see if they agreed with the other posts about coverage. Mine had to call their main office to find someone who knew the answer and was told that it is covered by the auto insurance policy on or off the truck by adding it to the auto policy but there was an additional charge. They have me paying additional premiums on comp and collision for the stated value of the camper which adds about $100 a year to my auto policy. Makes me a bit nervous when the same company gives different answers but guess I have to go with what my agent says.
Remember price will vary from State to State, City to City even within the same company. There are many other variables that can make the cost vary, such as, driving records, age, deductibles and more. Usually the price is based on value. A 5,000 dollar value camper is going to be much less to insure than a $40,000 camper. With some exceptions ---
Some companies consider it like any other accessory on the truck. It just gets the same coverage as the Truck, while it is on the truck. Those companies frequently don't cover the camper when off the truck, because it is no longer the truck. As an example most companies are going to automatically cover a trailer hitch while it is attached to the truck. However, if you take the hitch off put in your garage and then the hitch is stolen from the garage-- your vehicle insurance will no longer cover that loss in most cases. Your home policy probably would.
Other companies, like mine actually name and describe (Year Make Model VIN # Value), in the policy, the specific camper I own, therefore it is covered on or off. In a since it’s almost like insuring another vehicle. The rates should be low because losses in campers or trailers, in the big picture are far and few between.
Like a boat a lot of the time they just sit in our yards where they have very little exposure to a loss.
If you have a type of policy where your camper is not specifically covered & described by endorsement, I suggest you ask your agent to give you something in writing and have it reference your actual policy. The same for the agent that says your camper is covered by your home insurance.
On this particular issue it would be very, very rare for a major company like Farmers, State Farm, and Allstate to have two interpretations of the same policy. There is probably one person getting bad info. That is why I say, get it in writing. Insurance adjusters and underwriters make mistakes just like everybody. However, if your agent gives you something in writing the company will generally stand by him.....And if not your attorney will have a good time with them in court. Get in writing-- you have too much at risk. If your agent doesn’t want to give you anything in writing, there is probably a reason. Switch agents or companies.
There is a lot of confusion when it comes to Slide In Truck Campers, because almost all camper policies are written with the idea of a Trailer in mind.
With that said, many of you will have a rude awakening when you finally do have a claim, and you hear the explanation from the adjuster as to why you are not covered, or you are covered so low, for a specific claim.
Those of you in particular who are under the impression that you don't have to pay anything, or you only have to pay $32 per year etc, can expect to be surprised when you find out just what coverage you actually have.
You need to ask your agent to provide in writting the answers to your questions such as, Are you aware that this is a slide in truck camper and not a trailer, Is Vacation Liability Coverage included and for how much, what type of liability and physical damage limits do I actually have, what about Emergency Expenses, what about Personal Property limits, what about replacement cost, etc?
When they are forced to answer in writting, you will then find out just what type of coverage you have. For instance, with one insurer who told me verbally I was "covered for loss of limbs", when answering in writting wrote back Loss of Limb Coverage $1,000. Now I don't know about you, but I don't expect someone to get by with only $1,000 loss of limb coverage to someone injured as such by your camper. In such a case you can expect their attorney to be looking at your savings and assets to cover all above the "Loss of Limb Coverage at only $1,000.
The problem with truck campers is that they are confused with trailers, and when you tag it on to your homeowners and auto insurance you never get anything in writting until the adjuster shows up.
Find out what kind of insurance you are getting before it's too late to do anything about it. Don't just assume that since you are only paying a small amount, you got a "great deal". In fact, it may be the insurance company that got the "great deal".
Remember, most insurance companies spend more money finding out how not to pay, than how to pay, a claim.
