We are moving into an rv park for the rest of our working years (4) and the management will not allow washing machines to be used because the detergent messes up their septic tank (so they claim)...has anyone else run into this and is their a detergent that is 'septic tank' safe that I could run past the management to try to get clearance to use the washer.

Thanks
Greg and Connie

I use detergent from Sears and it states on the box that it is septic tank safe. Ulta Plus stock #30 9835

A couple of reasons could be that washers release a lot of water into the septic tank and they may not be equipped to handle it. Detergents don't harm septic tanks but a lot of bleach could be a problem. Or, more likely, they have a laundromat on the premises and want to make some extra money off you.

I'll just bet it's the later.....

I've been using a septic tank, growing up, at college and today for many, many years. No problems

When someone tells you to buy the same rig they own, listen, they might be right. When they tell you to buy a different rig then they own, really pay attention, they probably know something you don't.

I install septic and onsite wastewater treatment systems, and have not seen problems using laundry detergents in domestic septage, with normal use. The only issue that would concern me as that the septic system for the RV park was not designed to handle the discharge from full time residents, and they are trying to limit the effluent load to thier septic fields.
Now on the other hand if they have laundry facilities on site that discharge to the same septic field as the camp sites, I would have to agree with JohnnyPaul and say that they are just trying to make a buck.

We have a septic system at home and the washer dumps into it. We had a couple of times where we did too many loads and the waste from the washer wound up on the floor. I want to dig a trench and construct a drywell for washer run-off to avoid this.

Also, if you use anti-bacterial detergent it effects the enzymes that eat solid waste. We were told this by the guy who runs the honey-wagon. He said that killing bacteria may be good in the house, but it causes a buildup of solids in the septic tank because bacteria is what breaks it all down.

BINGO
powders tend to build up a wax like coating in the lines , liquids do not. This stuff can clog the drains. Been there, done that and paid the bill.

I have been on both types of septic systems "leach lines" and now the "aerobic system" for over 13+ yrs and I have NEVER had detergent problems effecting either type of septic system. Currently, I use Tide Free (powder), but I have used Cheer too. Sounds like a lot of "hog wash" to me. Hhehehehee

PS One thing that will effect any type of septic system is "what" you put down the garbage disposal. I am careful about that. No big chunks of food, veggies peals etc... they just go to the garbage can to be safe.
