Sent this to my wife. We are doing something similar starting tomorrow. I you have any extra time between Arches and Grand Canyon, you should go to Bryce Canyon NP - that and Arches are two of the best sites in the park system. Also at Arches, you can drive to the Dead Horse Point SP, about 50 miles each way, to see the canyonlands area there.
I have a question? "June 9 - Depart, Buck Creek SP, Ohio 550 miles
June 10 (2 nites) St. Louis (family) 400 miles
June 12 (1 nite) Wilson SP, Kansas 460 miles
June 13 (3 nites) Denver(family) 400 miles"
When you are at (family) why are you driving 400 miles? Also I have planned a route kind of like what you are doing and find that 9-11 hours of pulling the TT each leg of the trip is a real pain. and very tiring for all parties. If you are traveling with kids (1-15 years old) you might want to cut the driving time in half. You will also need many DVDs and a player that can plug into the cig'liter. You are pulling a TT so each stop may require time to unhook/setup and takedown/hookup, this should also be figured into the time that you travel each day. Your average day is 202 miles, that is about 4 hours @ day as an average that you will all be sharing the family thing. A little much. You might want to make this trip in 2 different vacations or maybe longer, like 45-60 days. Anyway that's my thoughts...Goood luck and enjoy.
marites62,
Have a great trip. If you would like to see our itinerary for our 2002 trip, just click on the link above Sig Pics. The photos tell the entire story.
Have a safe and happy trip.
Year before last we made a "coast to coast" trip and really enjoyed it. We got maps of each of the States we were going through plus a US map and then circled things/areas in each State that we were interested in seeing. Because of schedule changes we didn't get to all of them but it helped keep us on track as much as possible. One of the areas in PA that we hit is Gettysburg and I highly recommend that you stop there if at all possible. Another stop is Hershey, PA (you can really smell the chocolate in the air) and also at Philadelphia to see Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. My wife (the history buff) really enjoyed that part of the trip.
You are trying to fit too much in. For instance I would stay extra at Arches (need at least 3 days for Arches and Canyon Lands) and head for California from there. The swing south to Grand Canyon is not worth it. Too hot. Boring drive from Grand Canyon to Barstow to Monterey.

JAXFL - Sorry about the confusion. I hope the post is clearer now. I know the distances seem insane, but we're confident we can pull it off (no pun intended). We have a hybrid so setup/take down is a breeze. If possible, for one nite stays, we may not even need to unhook. We just took a 250 mile (each way) "test run" trip up to Watkins Glen, NY (beautiful, must-see place). It took us 5 hours each way, going about 55-60 miles per hour. The kids were terrific (not one movie or audio book!) and our TV had no problems pulling the trailer. Obviously, the 400 plus miles days will be around 7-8 hours in the car so yes, we will be well equiped with audio books, radio dramas, and last-resort DVDs! Our oldest daughter will be going off to college this year and this may be the last family vacation with the whole family.
Johnna- I definitely want to stay longer at Arches, but we can't just pass up the Grand Canyon! Can you think of a better route where we can still see the Canyon, even if it's for just a one nite stay?
