Well I just got my 5er out of storage and as I was removing my nice
$390.00 cover from camping world I noticed it actually wore thru my
nice 1 peice rubber roof !!!...That's right in 7 places, right along the
edges. Several holes are over 1" long right down to the metal edges
as the roof bends around the sides of the 5er roof line. Sure kept
it clean all winter though !!!

I managed to silicone caulk the holes but I will need to patch it
correctly later. What a complete waist of money and time to invest
in a top quality cover. It also wore holes in the cover around any sharp corner including around the gutters but I expected this.
This was a tyvek/Polypropylene Cover.

This is the exact reason why I always recommend to NOT use a cover on an RV when its outside. I've seen roof damage on rv's, mold and mildew build up on my boat, and cars that have the paint taken off every edge. They are ok if the vehicle is stored inside where no wind can blow the cover around, but outside, no. Which at that point kinda makes a cover a waste of money.

I've covered my Jayco fifth wheel for two winters now with a cover from Calmark covers from California it's quite expensive cost $1000.00 but it was custom fitted and I haven't had a problem with it. It is really important that you strap your cover down good so the it won't move around and wear the the roof edges.

Another vote against the covers. Ours too had several holes in it after one winter. Now have a nice metal cover that we drive under. So much easier!!

Wow! I've been so close to buying a cover. We just got our 5er within the last 2 months. With all of the expenses associated with getting everything we needed I put off buying the cover for a few months. After reading this I think I'll just keep the money and do without the cover. Thanks for posting!!

I'm glad I stumbled upon this post as my dh and I were just discussing purchasing a cover for our 5er before it went into storage for winter. I'll have to mention this to him.

I've use covers on all of units including my tt and both fivers. I have never experienced any trouble as you have described. Last year they went through two tropical storms and one was close to being a minimal hurricane and still no problems. Oh, I think I developed a small hole in the cover but it does not run or get any larger. As you can see in my misc pictures that I put it on after each use. I had a class A cover on my Cougar and a fifth wheel cover on my Compass. Neither has been any trouble and it sure does keep it clean and bright. I put it on 99% of the time by myself. I climb on the roof to do it.
Other than condensation being the number one killer of a RV, UV rays come in a close second. I will continue to take my chances with them. Five years and still going strong. I have had good luck with them and find them to work great for me.
I would contact the manufacturer and send pictures of the damage if I were you. Don't let them off so easy. Good luck

This is not the first post I've read about covers rubbing holes in rubber roofs. Luckily I read enough of the bad posts so that I didn't bother to cover mine this winter. It took a full weekend to clean it after the winter, but that is better than replacing the roof.

Sorry that you had a problem, at least your post will help other not to make the same mistake.

When we bought our tt, I told dh that I wanted a cover for it. The service manager told dh, that they carried covers, but he wouldn't recommend us buying one. He said that they did more damage than good.
