Hope Old Fella feels better. Great news about the organization. There's a place in Arkansas that can use some people like Richard and Bruce:

Arkansas city's shelter releases stray dogs in national forest08:08 PM CDT on Thursday, June 12, 2008Associated Press LITTLE ROCK — Unable and unwilling to keep abandoned dogs in a dilapidated shelter, the city of Helena-West Helena is taking strays to a national forest and leaving them on the side of the road. “They are better off free,” Mayor James Valley said Thursday. “Pardon the pun, but it was just something that was dogging us. So it would be easier for us until we get a facility and have a plan that we just not be in the animal shelter business.” But the St. Francis National Forest isn't in the animal shelter business, either. “In the code, it is illegal to release animals, livestock or abandoned personal property on national forest land,” spokeswoman Tracy Farley said. Valley said the city's animal shelter was so run down that a regional humane society worker cut its locks last winter and released all the dogs. The shelter was then temporarily moved to four uncovered pens at the city sanitation department. After people complained the animals were still not properly cared for, the mayor decided the dogs would be better off in the forest. The city street director on Wednesday took about 10 dogs to the forest after feeding and watering them. About three dogs were kept to be put down by a veterinarian, Valley said. He said the city would need $50,000 to $60,000 to open a new animal shelter — and also must enforce existing animal-control laws. “We have a leash law that we've been trying to work our way into enforcing. It's been so lax,” the mayor said. “People are not buying leashes or tags for the animals. We could literally pick up every other dog in the city.” If animal-control officers get a call now, “they're going to pick the dog up and probably just take them to the other side of town,” Valley said. “And it's going to be someone else's problem. ... or maybe they will take them to the forest.”

Hope the pain meds work for Old Fella and he feels better soon. Praying that the specialist will be able to help Old Fella so he and your family can enjoy a few more years together. Great news regarding the progress with the Old Fella foundation.

Some great news and some not so great news. I hope that Old Fella can get some relief from the new Doc. I know with my arthritis, I have good days and bad days.

Fella had a bad night. He was in pain as he whined off and on as he tried to move about to find a comfortable position to lay in. This morning he didn't want his food, just wants to lay around. I gave him a pain pill hoping that will help. I hope to take him to the specialist in Aiken, SC next week to get her opinion.

Suzie is acting as if she hasn't been gone for a week, just took up where she left off, chasing squirrels, birds and Izzie. She also isn't letting us out of her sight, thinks maybe she might get left again.

Sue and I took Fella for a ride about the neighborhood in his cart yesterday while Suzie walked on her leash. Fella really enjoys the cart rides and looks forward to it. People passing by in their cars honk at us, wave and ask if they can get a ride in the cart.

A representative from the ASPCA was in Waynesboro yesterday talking with the Old Fella organization and it looks as if they are going to get a large grant to help with the spay and neutering project.

Bruce Storm told me yesterday the land will be cleared shortly and a sight plan done for construction. They have made tremendous progress under Bruce's guidance and the volunteers seem to like him very much. I am glad things have turned out the way they have. Bruce has good people skills and is a very smart person as well as being very organized.

Okay I have to go for now, so I will talk with you later.

Please accept my condolences in your loss. I understand how difficult it is to see the passing of important individuals from our earthly journey and yet celebrate the passing over.

Now that the rally is over and everyone is back home I guess we will settle into our daily routines. I doubt we will be going anywhere else this summer. Of course we will be making short camping trips close by, but that will be about it. Old Fella is doing about the same, just laying around taking it easy. It is so hot outside and we need some of the rain the folks are getting north of us.

The funeral service went nice yesterday as Ms. Mildred’s life and home going was celebrated. She was such a sweet lady, always caring for others more than herself. She and her husband came to Waynesboro in 1935 to work for Mr. Lewis in the funeral home business and in 1945 went into business for themselves. Their son George has taken over the business many years ago, but his mother continued to work in the flower shop until just a few years ago. I believe the most beautiful flower in the shop was her. We will miss her greatly.

Richard, sorry to hear about your friend. How did Fella do on the trip? Was it hard on him to travel so far from home? And how did Susie do? Was she glad to see you?

The trip didn't add to Fella's problems and Suzie was soooo glad to see us. Izzie wanted all of the attention when we got home and took it out on Suzie's bed when he didn't get what he thought he needed. After that Izzie hid from me for hours, finally coming out at bed time.

My friend was 93 years old and was my mother's best friend. She helped raise me and was a big influence in my life. Words cannot really discribe the wonderful person she was and the example she left for us to follow.
