Call Remco and ask them, they are the leaders in transmission modifications. They will tell you exactly what you can or cannot do with the tracker. Here is their website. I had a Tracker 2wd 5sp, I had the same problem getting conflicting reports, Remco set me straight. My Tracker was towable 4 down. I would trust Remco over a dealer.

I realize this is an old thread but I'm about to buy a '92 Tracker 4x4, auto, 48,000 miles, hard top and soft top. How do you Freewheel the Transfer case? I travel alone and am not a mechanic but can handle some things.

If you want to tow 4 wheels down with an automatic, it must be a 4x4. You just put the transfer case in neutral with the key in the ACC position to unlock the steering column. Mine has Auto-Locking hubs. I tow it behind my 33 ft MH. The owner's manual advises you to keep the speed down to about 55mph and stop about every 200 miles and run the engine with the tranny in Drive to circulate the fluid through the transfer case bearings and gears. It doesn't create a problem for me since I need to get up and stretch my legs or use the room by then. I plan my stops to eat or top off the gas tank which is about 20 gallons, and run the Tracker engine while the MH fills up to save time. Since the Tracker only weighs about 2500 lbs m/l, it tows very well and if I didn't see it in my rear camera I would hardly know it's there. It only costs me a 1/2 mpg to have it along.

Thanx Jim E., how do I know whether I have Auto Locking hubs? There's a center piece that I assume can be turned since there's a Free position and a Lock position on the hub. I looked in the owners manual but haven't quite figured it out yet.

Just got it registered and got the plate today. Yippee! I fell in love w/a tiny little white '92 tracker in '92 and now I finally got one!!
