Friday night, it happened...I lost a tire! Heading out of town for a weekend fishing and camping trip with my son to the Padre Island National Park the back tire on the right side went away.
I've enjoyed the fact that my '04 Jayflight came factory equipped with Goodyear Marathons. The set probably has 5,000 to 6,000 miles on them. I left the house and everyone of the tires was just fine. About 30 miles into the trip I stopped to get some drinks and snacks for the trip. Walking around the trailer for a routine inspection before heading into the store and there it was...a rim without a tire! Or more accurately a rim with about 2 inches of tire left on it. Yes, the side of the trailer took some damage...probably about $200 worth if I get it fixed.
The scary part to me was that I had no change in handling. The trailer was riding on three tires the forth was just hanging in the breeze. If the other tire had blown I would have noticed it I guess, but as it was I had no clue.
Maybe it's time we all invested in a tire pressure monitoring system for our RV's. The Goodyear Marathons enjoy a good reputation and I think they are good trailer tires. If it gets a hole and looses pressure I guess it does not really matter who makes it.
Happy Trails...

I've often wondered if the systems like smartTire are worth the $$. Guess this is a vote to the positive!
Glad to hear damage isn't so bad and you are fine.

Unfortunately the first sign most would have of a problem would be someone waving and yelling as they pass. If you think about it though, that's better than if they really caused a problem when they went flat and the trailer got all squarely. Sounds like you got off pretty light. Good luck / Skip

I had to get rid of my Godyear Marathons. They kept falling apart. Now that one tire fell apart and shredded all that bad you need two tires. The other tire on that side rode quite a while carrying all the weight and was extremely overloaded. It will probably fall apart very soon, when it does it will injure the other tire on that side. Be safe buy both on the same side whatever brand that you buy.

Just a quick reminder that the tire beside the one that blew has been way overloaded. If it was my rig, that would become my spare tire. Then remember to put matching tires on same axle, not same side.

I to had a Marathon blowout. I had was returning fron running from Hurrican Katrina. After pulling fron Florida home as the wife and I were getting the 5th wheel into the yard. She noticed the the right front trailer tite had a big bulge on, called me on the radio to look at it. Last stop on the way in a visual revealed that all tires looked okay. Since it was getting dark and we were home I put the trailer into it stowage spot. Then next mornig I was out picking up limbs in yard and heard an explosion, yep, the bulge in the side wall blew. Mind you the tire stayed up untill I change it and carried to Good Year f0r replacement. The dealer has not beenmuch help on warranty, not the Good Year people. They sent the tire off for analasis. Looks like I will not get any help warranty on the $175.00 replacement. I may note that these tire have less than 10,000 miles.

Scott,
Could the valve stem been the cause of the air loss that made the tire fail? I've seen cheapo valve stems that crack and leak within two years. Since then, I've always used metal valve stems.
Also, an unbalanced tire seems to me to be stressing the tire more than it should. The tire bouncing down the road at highway speed can't be good for it. Many trailer wheels do not have the center pilot hole machined in the true center. These wheels MUST be mounted on a lug-centric adapter on the balancing machine for a correct balancing job.

I'm free of prostate cancer for 5 years now.
All men over age 50 should get an annual PSA blood test. Mine had a low reading, but the yearly jump was significant. The biopsy showed cancer just entering the aggressive stage. Dr. Hackenslash removed it.

I run Marathons too and have no complaints but I'm not adamant about the brand. They just seem like good solid tires to me. TT tires get much more stress than car tires so a shorter life is to be expected IMHO.
Anyway, I would like to know what kind of sway control you are using and maybe the weight difference TV to TT. I know it happens now and then, but losing a tire while driving without having any noticable effect seems like pretty good handling to me.
