Will a 18" dish work for DirecTv in Baja? Or should I take my 30" dish?

Yep, actually drove to all of these places---in the last eight years. Missed Rhode Island and New Jersey.

I purchased a 1.2 meter dish specifically for Baja 3 years ago. About 200 miles past the border you will find that the 18" dish will not work. I imagine your 30" dish might work further but I was told that I needed the 1.2 dish which at the time they called the Baja Dish. I have Direct TV. There are a couple of web sites that can tell you what you need depending on where you are and will tell you the settings. This web site is where I purchased my dish. Hope this helps.

I'm not a Direct TV user (I have Dish Network), but there has been a recent discussion on the Baja Nomad board among the Direct users about them losing half the channels. It seems that Direct moved all the odd number (or maybe it was the even number) channels to a new satellite that has a much tighter footprint. This footprint does not cover Baja Sur no matter how big your dish is. You can still get the rest of the channels with a 1.2 meter dish though.

My Dish Network 18" dish worked as far as San Quintin. I didn't try it after that but know from friends that live down there that BCS needs a 1.2 meter dish for Dish Network.

T-T Just wondering if Direct TV split the channels to two different satelites wouldn't we need two dishes? I had no problem in 2004 with the 1.2 meter dish.
