The road is narrow and there is a lot of deep sand further in the loop, so it would have been impassible for him to leave that way. When he broke camp he had to back out the way he came in - a distance of about one city block. It was an impressive display of driving skill.

He may not have had a choice - got in there then realized the dilemna, so decided to stay and enjoy. Of course, a city block is not too far, depending on the length of that city block.
