Go to the AKC website and ask for breeders in your area, they will send you a list. Also if you have a local kennel club in your area they will do the same. Good advice is not to buy off the internet. Most people here except some show people are doing it for profit only. Find your breeder who is breeding for the betterment of the breed and has been in it for a long time. Don't get in a hurry. I looked for 2 months for my current dog.
First a good reputable breeder will ASK YOU for references and then go on to ask you more questions then you can think of to ask them. Money is secondary to this type of breeder, assuring their dogs go to a good home is their primary concern. That is the difference in a for profit breeder and one who does it for the right reasons.
Second a good reputable breeder will not hesitate to provide you answers to your questions and give you references. They will encourage you to see the parent(s) of the pups if you want to and they will be glad to give you a few names of people who have bought their dogs so you can talk with other owners.
Please contact either the the AKC group for the breed you are interested in or a breed specific rescue group. There are far too many puppies in this world needing a good home to settle for one that is not only overpriced but from a questionable breeder that likely is a nothing more than a back yard breeder or small puppy mill. There are SO many out there with slick websites that look very professional and the truth is behind those doors or fences breeding dogs live in hell right here on earth producing poorly bred litters that exist in a filth right along with them until weaned.....

I need some help the DW and I are at a impasse on picking a breeder for a new Yellow Lab.
We spent alot of time looking around the net and found a breeder who looked like they had really nice looking dogs. We emailed them and they replied with a phone number to call and stated that their house and kennel were recently lost to a flood and they are living abroad with limited access to phone and Internet. No problem, found a list on the net about some questions to ask. Started asking some of them and when I got to do you have any pictures of frontal head shots so we could see the shape of the heads of the parents. It's a English Lab, they have block heads like a Rottweiler. They told us a website to go to to see the sire, but due to no house, phone, or Internet that would be next to impossible to see pics of the mother. I'm kinda ok with that, DW is totally ok with it. Next I ask if they can put me in contact with some former customers as references. They get a little upset and state their website an reputation should speak for itself. DW is ok with this I'm not. When I press her that this is gonna cost alot of money for the pet and I wanna make sure the average Joe who buys one of her puppies is satisfied. They tell me that maybe I should go elsewhere. Someone who refuses to give references is either hiding something or actually is that good and doesn't feel the need to explain themselves. In my mind even though you are out of house and home for 1200 bucks?? I don't think it's to much to ask to get some references for whatever hassle it is. After all at the end of the day this is about money and I'd like to make sure I'm spending my money well. DW thinks I should crawfish back to them and apologize, I say no way. In fact I wanna send them a nasty gram. Please give me your opinion for or against.
RUN as fast as you can from these people.
Start here by contacting the National Breed Club for the breed of dog you are looking for.
Scroll down to the breed you want. The National Breed Club will have a list of breeders that belong to a local club in your area. They should also have listed their Rescue Club for that breed too.
Good Luck. http://www.akc.org/clubs/search/index.cfm?action=national&display=on

Rvingashley, great link. I tried looking around for something like that and had a real hard time wading through alot of the useless stuff.
Dualgwp, unfortunately I work on weekends, in fact as I type I'm about to leave work. So I won't be able to attend the dog show. I hope to talk wifey into going it alone since she's off on weekends. When you get a chance send me some info on your vet if you don't mind.
Don, a lot of reputable breeders have web sites-this is how they advertise and is not a valid reason to avoid them. However, ANY breeder regardless of how they advertise that won't give you references or comes up with excuses why not to see their facilities should be avoided. They are obviously hiding something.
My SIL breeds labs with those block heads you are looking for. They aren't termed "English Labs" but are an incredible line of gorgeous, blocky, and show quality animals with fantastic temperaments. Keep looking using the advice given-dog shows, AKC, vets, etc. You'll find what you want but it may take some time.
