The $1,500 mentioned is the cap on sales tax; in many states it is 6% of the total sales price... In other words, I paid $1,500 sales tax on a new Phaeton in 2004...
According to General Statute 105-187.2, for new vehicle purchases NC charges a 3% "Highway Use Tax" in lieu of a state sales tax, as evidenced here: NC-HUT
Then you can read up on all the additional taxes, fees, and such for registering here: NC vehicle registrations
Don't forget to check the link for "Vehicle Titling & Registration: Title/Plate Fees Section" about halfway down the page for more good news.
Then there's the good old personal property tax: NC-PPT
Regardless of what they want to call each, NC LOVES their taxes...
If you believe personal property taxes are bad in NC, try Virginia. The personal property tax last year on MH was about $2500 plus cost of license plates. That was after a titling tax of just under $5000. The personal property tax does reduce based on value each year, but, is still extreme. Virginia does not miss ANY opportunity to tax it's residence.
We are retired and are considering a change of residence to Florida [probably will] because of the tax situation in Virginia.

True but you did not go far enough. Use tax is capped at $1500 unless the vehicle is over 26001 lbs then the cap on use tax is $1000. NC REGS

Re the poster that has their RV registered in Alaska,
Anyone can do this, if they have a friend in Alaska that can be the trustee of a trust. Just register the RV to the trust, and make the situs of the trust Alaska.
Then, your friend, as Trustee, can register, and insure the RV (as Trustee, and not individually).
Another advantage is that you no longer own the RV, thus reducing your exposure to liability. (The Trust owns it, and you enjoy it, as beneficiary).
If, however, you hold the original MSO, all this registration******can be bypassed. (You have perfect title.)
Just my 2 cents worth.
No liability assumed, no value assured, without recourse.
I am in this old rig for three reasons:
(1) to have fun with my family.
(2) to annoy the old people who are grumpy.
(3) to annoy the people deep in debt with their rig.
I'd consider "MONTANA" before I moved to NC or anywhere else for that matter. See all the advertisements in Motorhome magazine in the classifieds. Then travel wherever you want for as long as you want.
FYI: Property taxes can vary widely in NC based on the county you live in. If ou have the freedom to live anywhere you want based on what you want to do, avoid major metropolitan areas, i.e. Raleigh - Research Triangle, Charlotte, Etc. The state collects the use tax and registration fees (tags). The counties collect the property taxes. And some cities have their own local property taxes. The more 'rural' your address is, generally the lower your taxes will be each year.
