Ants need food to live, make sure everything edible is sealed up in jars, bags, etc. Believe it or not you can outlast them.

You did the right thing by moving to another campground (I warned you), but you will have to be vigilant for a while. You may have to move again.

You can use poison, but you risk the health of your pet(s) doing so. Poison doesn't care who it harms, and it will always be lingering in your coach, forever. One of my dogs actually likes the taste of ants (go figure), the last thing I would want to do is have dead, poisoned ants laying about.

PS: Diazinon will kill almost ALL known insects, far from a killer of choice. Read the lable you'll see a VERY strong dis-claimer. I know, I sell the stuff.

Thanks for the reply! We are for sure not going to use the poison. I read that the Terro stuff is ok....hopefully that is correct. I wouldn't put my kitty or us in danger!
We've got all the food in containers, just about. They are getting into the fridge though.

:-(

It this kind of invasion normal? Does this happen a lot down here?!

Get some Boric acid powder and sprinkle that wherever you see them and anyplace they could get in. That stuff will nock there socks off. You may want to check about its affect on the cat, we never put it where the dog could get to it. Try it it works. Good luck.

If you are now on a concrete pad you can stop the influx of new ants by forming a perminiter around the pad. You will have to use a spray poison to keep the ants from continuing to infest the RV. I carry a gallon spray bottle in the RV and use it wherever we go. I never heard of swarming like you have experienced, but if you don't exterminate them it will be a long session. The other thing is if the queen moved into your RV the ants will continue to perpetuate. You got to put the kitty in the Kennel and poison those ants. Kitty will survive when it comes back home.

Cat,

Wow in all of years of RVing we've never had a problem like you've described. If it were me in the same situation, I'd end up calling the local exterminator to fumigate the trailer. Take Theodore Mittens for a road trip while the expert does his magic. How to prevent in the future, I have no idea. Hopefully some other forum members will have some viable solution. Good luck!

Carpenter ants don't eat candy you must have some other type of ant.

I also matched them exact to a picture online....they are quite....er....unmistakeable! Yuck!
I've also read a few sites about the smell they are emitting. It's pheremones. Nasty NASTY stench!

starspun I posted this before. go to a farm supply store and buy acephate it will kill your ants whatever kind they are along with any other crawling critter. it is harmful to pets but as I said before the odor seems offensive to my dog and he stays away from it. you can just put it inside cabinets where your pets are not exposed. talk to someone at a farm supply store and get advice from people that know what they are talking about. your choice!!

Haha! I can't imagine anything swarming more than what I have witnessed. Probably a good call!

I have different ants (Argentine) but if they are sweet eating ants use Terro Ant Killer. It is a mild solution of a borate product in a tasty (to ants) sugar base. It has a very low toxicity- your cat could drink a whole bottle without problem. I've tried to make the same thing from corn syrup and boric acid but the ants don't like my version nearly as much.

I also use diatomaceous earth as a physical barrier. Don't use the pool grade as it is a very bad inhalation hazard for humans and animals.

This outfit has lots of different products and info. I've purchased from them. Biocontrol Network

I'm just so scared of poison. Do you know if it's harmful if my cat were to eat the ants? Would the poision stay in the RV forever?

I guess we'll wait to see if the bait works. If not, I guess fumigate, and really clean this place up good after. That or sell it and move somewhere else....cut our losses!
