I need a little "more" advice. My Dealer says that I should only plug in the shore line a day or two before going out on the road, and that leaving it plugged in will roast my batterys. Anybody know the truth?

It's not recommended that you leave it connected during storage periods because the batteries can lose electrolytic fluids and become damaged from continuous charging without periodic use.

A proper charger will not harm the batteries. I guess the dealer is telling you something.

IMO if you are actually using the rig, the danger of overcharging batteries is small.

If rig just sits unused, it depends on converter. IMO with ANY converter, if you just plug it in one day a month everything wil be fine (assuming you've turned things off, and removed fuse for propane and smoke detectors).

During storage, our Fleetwood Jamboree batteries seem to stay charged with the "trickle solar charger" attached to the top of the motorhome. I like to run the motorhome and generator some about every month and make sure the batteries are fully charged. I plug it in only before the next trip as we get ready for the trip the day before we leave. My greatest concern is not leaving the batteries discharged as they are being out of use for an extended time.

The dealer knows that he sold you a converter that will overcharge the batteries. You can follow his advice or replace the converter with a good one or use a small 2 stage charger while in storage.

Your batteries will be overcharged during that period of time which will shorten their lives to some degree.

All RV's aren't created equal...and neither are the converters installed in them.

For some, the BEST thing to do is to leave them plugged in 24/7/365. For others, you need to either replace the converter or develop a charging plan to keep from destroying your batteries early.

Post the make and model of your converter, and we can probably give you an answer that fits YOUR situation.

MELM is exactly right.....

My motorhome has been plugged in 24/7/365 for over 7 years now........fridge has been on that entire time too.........I did get tired of putting water in my batterys every few weeks so a few years ago I invested in a PD9160 3 stage charger......now I only replenish the water about twice a year.......

There is nothing wrong with leaving it plugged in provided you have the right equipment......
