Exactly. The 7.3 did turn out to be a very good motor. But if you got one from the first year, they had their problems. Cavitational pitting, bad injector o-rings, bad belt tensioners...........all these things got cleared up, but it took Ford a couple of years to do it.
It's very similar to the 6.0 story, the difference being that the 6.0 had a lot more early problems. But after two years, Ford had solved most of them.

The first 7.3's were fine also. Then about 2 years later we started reading about cavitational pitting problems because International had forgot to tell Ford to put DCA in the coolant.

True, but that's also the same 7.3 everyone seems to think is better than anything since.
My point was meant to be that I am already feeling like it isn't as bad as the intro of the 6.0. It would certainly be better to wait a year or more but if he's ready to buy now, it isn't the question.
450 or 550? Right now? 550!
Like the thought of finding an 06-07 6.0 on a lot somewhere for a great deal, but you hardly see any that aren't the XL work truck...not very suitable for RV'ing in comfort.

I can tell you this tho. He loads it with as much as 10,000# or cargo and it never whempers, never sags in the rear. He is in the landscap business and its always overloaded without complaint.

The only reason I knew about DCA (FW-15 back then) was because I had read about it on the Powerstroke forum.
I would like to trust Ford/Navistar on that new 6.4, but there just ain't no way I can given their diesel history. I will have to see results. The 6.4 has all kinds on brand new stuff on it that may or may not work out over the long run.

I have no regrets of purchasing my 2007 F550. Now realize I skipped a few trucks considering I went from a Tundra and pop up Northstar TC. To the F550 and OK 116ULT. The reason I did it was so I could not out grow any TC. If I did then it's time to move on to a Fifth wheel and that might be OK since I'll have the truck for it.
I went with the 07 because I didn't want to try out the new engine. I know the 6.0 had their problems but from all my research it is no longer an issue. I wonder if there is any 450 or 550 07's left on any lots if so I bet the price is right. If I had to buy the new engine I agree with what most people have said and wait at least a year.As far as it having a warranty goes I don't want to use it.Of course I would if needed but who is going to reimburse me for the hours and hours at the dealership to get things fixed. I went through this with a 1999 Dodge I had, they eventually bought it back but nothing for my time. That's my $0.02 Good Luck.

An F550 diesel crew cab 4x4 with a pickup bed (custom upfitter) would have a cargo carrying capacity (CCC) of approximately 8,400 lbs (depending on options)
This would be plenty for any camper I can think of "
Keep in mind that a chassis cab 550 will most likely weigh 10500 pounds with a bed and full fuel. Still quite a bit of payload.
Jim
I can tell you exactly what a crew cab F-550 weighs with a pickup bed on it. My son has an 07 for work. The registration says 9,354 lbs. That was weighed with almost empty tank and pickup bed installed. Nobody in the truck, NO tools nothing. That leaves approx. 8,600# for cargo.
