Back in April, I came here telling you how impressed I was with the performance of the Airlink AWLL3055 USB Wi-Fi adapter and antenna.
We have spent the past 4 days on the shore of a lake in North Dallas. Being a Corps of Engineers park, there was no Wi-Fi offered and because the park is somewhat remote, there were no WI-Fi sources that my laptop could see.
While sitting at the picnic table, I plugged in the Airlink AWLL3055, pointed it at a small group of a few houses on the opposide shore. Up popped 3 signals. I latched onto the strongest (with a 36% signal strength) and got on the Internet.
Later, I pulled up my location on Streets & Trips just to see how far it was over to the source of the signal I had been using.
It was over 1/2 mile ! .66 to be exact !
Admittedly it was over water with no obsticles, but that distance is a new record for me.
Thanks for the info. I tried the Hawking HWU8DD and for the life of me I could not get it to work at all. Returned it, and will now go with the Airlink.
After reading Healeyman's review of the Airlink, I too bought one at a local Fry's Electronics. We just finished a whirlwind trip through the midwest and I took it with me just to experiment with while we traveled.
Although I actually used the hotel's wifi each place, I also used the Airlink to see how much better it would do (or not). In every case it improved the number of sites available and I could see Flying J's a block away, etc; Really a powerful antenna.

This thing sure works.

I have a Hawking HWU8DD and the older HWU54D. On the beach in Mexico, I have used both of them to connect for weeks at a time to a network 2.2 miles (!) across the bay.
That's my record.
