We are looking for somewhere good to dry camp over Memorial Weekend. Somewhere with ATV trails & preferably somewhere to have a campfire. We currently have plans for Hatcher's Pass, but there is a new burn-ban for all of Mat-Su Valley. Also, is there anyone else out there who has been to Hatcher's Pass for riding? What kind of terrain & trails? Thanks!

I called the Mat-Su Forestry and they stated that it is not a ban at this time, only a suspension and that campfires are fine in a fire ring/fire pit but that "you better be roasting marshmallows or hotdogs". So, as long as you use caution, a campfire is okay, not necessarily encouraged.

I did happen to ask the difference between the ban and the suspension, and they said if there is a ban, NOTHING is allowed. I really hope that is not the case over the weekend.

Bluba,

There is only the one trail that I know of from the Willow side. About 7 miles in, you'll come to a bridge. Camping off to the left or up another mile with camping on the creek. (ChurchCreek trail head is across the creek/river goes back to Wasilla, All Muskegg) There are also 3 other spots for camping along the road up to about 3 miles pass the bridge. Don't get to far in though, not to many places to turn around.

To the trail... ride the atv's about 2 miles pass the bridge. You'll round a righthand corner. On the left in this corner, you'll see a trail headed up into the mountain. You'll notice small logs across the trail. You'll know this is it. This trail goes in about 26 miles. Makes a left hand loop and comes out back at the bridge. All types of terrain. You'll come onto everything. Good part is, the muskegg is all passable. Look for the side trails.

Other than this, you can ride the road all the way over to Wasilla. Seeing the Mines at the top is cool.

Have a great weekend. I'll be in Talketna myself

Dave

Thanks Dave I will post after the weekend and let you know how it went. We did talkeetna about a month ago and it was fun but not a whole lot of riding with the rhino because it won't fit acrossed the bridge. Hope all is well with your holiday weekend. Josh

Well Hatcher's pass was awesome. We had a great time and the riding on the Willow side was unlimited. I would recommend these trails to anyone who is looking for a challenge. Mud, hills, rocks, and beautiful views. How was Talkeetna?
