We have just heard from a fellow RV'er that they paid $75 a night at Heritage RV Park. This is unbelievable, and certainly not in our budget.
What are your recommendations for a RV park in Homer?
Would it be better staying on the spit? Hubby loves to fish - so that would certainly be a draw for us.
All advice and help will be greatly appreciated - as always.
Jackie,We just left Homer a week or so ago & yes it's true they wanted that much, but he said the showers are free,LOL,We stayed at Homer spit campground for $35 i think a little less maybe with electric, they had water & a dump station,Even got a few tv stations,We thought it was really nice on the water,We had ablast there.Have fun.I would stay on the spit,it's great seeing them bringing in the fish.
Driftwood in oldtown is small but nice with hookups and on the beach but not on the spit.
John's Homer Spit Campground offers elect, h2o but not as hookup, dump station, bathrooms and hot showers. It puts you in the middle of the the action of fishing and shopping. If you are going to stay awhile you could stay at both and on the beach boondocking.
While in Homer go see Jean Keene "The Eagle Lady" in the Homer Spit Campground. Buy her book and she will sign it for you. Tell her King and Bernie said hi, shes a friend of ours. There are boat tours to Halibut Cove and a good restraunt. Tours to Gull Island and Seldovia. These villages will show a way of life different than most.
If in Seldovia walk the nature trail that takes you up to the North beach brochures are available in town that shows the trail head. Be sure to walk the slew. Out in the islands you can sea kayak.
Sounds like you are arriving at the time we are leaving. If you are still around after July 9th when we get back I am planning to Halibut fish the 13, 14, and 15 then take the boat home and strip it down for dip netting on the Kenai River.

I've noticed that over the past three years, Heritage has picked up business. I priced them in '04 when they opened and told them that I would be back if I hit the lottery.
Last summer we stayed at a very small facility beside Capt Bob's Charters. It's just past the public park and on the same street that you launch at the small boat harbor. Nothing fancy, but I believe it was $30 daily with 30A. Water and Sewer. Only had 8 or 9 spaces. For us it was better than the city park. It is convenient to both the "fishing hole" and the charter fleet.
We stayed at the Heritage RV Park in 2004 when the rate was $45 a night. But when I checked with them last summer, 2006, they were up to the $75 rate. The same folks that own the RV Park also own the hotel in town by the same name I am told. So I found a different CG on down the spit to stay. The Heritage is nice without a doubt and many RVers stay there from eye balling it as I drove by.
As Kingsley mentioned the "eagle lady" is interesting and has been the subject of a considerable amount of controversy in Homer. First of all it is illegal to feed wildlife in Alaska. Which she does. Some of my "greener" Homer friends claim she is making the eagles "human dependent" by feeding them. I was told the Homer City Council passed an ordinance prohibiting such going on with wild life but "grandmothered" her to continue. Of course in the winter time it doesn't take much to get a small community like Homer to get their undies in a bunch. Not too sure where I came up with the "green" friends that I have in Homer as I was once accused of wanting to "pave the tundra" and wanting to make Caterpillar yellow the state color. LOL
I stayed last year at the Homer Spit CG and enjoyed it. Had water and electric and used the dump station. They have paid showers $1 as of last summer. I only stayed 3 or 4 days visiting friends in town and out the East End road. One night I took my drink out to sit on a log and watch the sunset. Soon a couple joined me, then other RVers joined us, bringing snacks, drinks, etc. We all set around till about midnight lying about all sorts of RV stuff, like our fuel mileage, how smart our dogs are, what outstanding drivers we are, etc. LOL Folks in Alaska campgrounds are so friendly.
The Homer Spit CG is the last one on the right as you head out to the end of the spit. Just before the Homer Ferry terminal building. Nothing fancy but Location, location, location.
I was in Homer last week and looked over the RV park in question. Much too rich for my budget. There are several others available on the Spit if you must stay there and others in town, too.
I can say the Halibut fishing was pretty good based on the catches we saw coming in. 101 and 95 pounders on down to the "chicken" size. Great Halibut and chips at the Boardwalk on the spit -- I ate there several times and never got too much!
We plan on staying at Alaskan Angler the month of July, it is close enough to Homer and the rates are much better. This is our choice for halibut fishing also.
Look us up if anybody is going there in July. Grey mh w/white Honda toad.
