Going to do 6-7 days (Starting 6/17) trek thru the MI UP. Thinking about the following:
Night 1 -Iron Mtn or Menominee Area
Night 2 - East Hiawatha N.F. Area
Night 3 - Pictured Rocks Nat Lakeshore Area
Night 4 - Copper Harbor Area
Night 5 - Houghton Area
Night 6 - Ironwood Area
And having an option to spend an extra night at any one of those areas or add another spot.
Question:
1. Any suggestions on what "Not to miss" in these areas
2. Any particular nice campgrounds to stay at?
Just want to see the UP area. No kids, just us two retired folk..........
Thanks for any input.

Do not miss Mackinac Island (if you get that far east)!!

Friends of ours really like PJ McLain SP, near Copper Harbor. Many of the SPs are nice up there.

Get a national forest map and seek out water falls. Add in a light house or two. and add several days to see so much more.

that is what we did three years ago and will be doing again soon.

Best place to stay in Cooper Harbor is Fanny Hooe camp ground the price is actually less than the State Park and have better sites, roads, and a lot less smoke from fires and noise. The Michigan State Park cost has gotten higher than the private camp grounds with there exra fees.

About 3 weeks ago we did what you"re going to do. We stayed at a really nice CG in Munising MI (town owned I think) just out of town, right on the Lake. first night we were the only ones there, next night there were about 4 more rvs. Prices were from $20 lakefront, dropping $2 for every row back from the lake. The only bad thing was it sat a little too close to the highway for me, you could hear the traffic. Then we headed to Picture Rocks to do some 'boondocking' in the Nat. Lakeshore CG. The road to the CG was quite a challenge, narrow and dirt for several miles, wouldn't want to try it when wet, but excellent scenery. When we got there it was WAY too buggy for us-the maintenance man said the bugs weren't too bad yet-wasn't too far into the season-with a swarm of about 20 mosquitoes around his head. We didn't stay there but drove back to Grand Marias to the small town-owned(?) CG there. Great CG. Again right on the Lake, about 50' above it (steps down to the beach). The sunsets however were UNBELIEVEABLE!! worth the whole trip just to see them. That is definately in our plans to go there again soon. Prices were $25 lakefront and dropping $2 (I think) for each row back. Have fun! Post some pics if you can. We have some great sunset pics, but I barely know how to reply to a topic. Maybe we'll get it figured out before you go to let you get a preview. Gary
