Way back when we had a TT, I decided to spiff up the van with new alloy wheels. Didn't read the fine print stating "come back for nut retorquing after 150 kms." Of course, 300 km later on a windy mountain road the van starts vibrating, DW says, "Could it be the new wheels?"
"Don't be silly. It must be a u-joint." Ten seconds later-KABOOM! All hell breaks loose. In my side mirror, I see a tire rolling across 3 lanes and over the embankment. Much traffic had been there seconds earlier. The left rear had come off, hit the TT and almost flipped it. Good thing for equalizer hitches and dual axle trailers! One night in a repair shop, and major repairs the next week.
I agree with rule #1. DW is always right!

My first mistake was not buying an RV sooner.

My last mistake was scheduling only 10 days at Topsail Hill near Destin FL. Should have stayed longer.

I opened the slide right into the truck, which I had parked next to the RV.

My first travel trailer was a bit of a beater that I bought for local hunting trips. The first trip with it, I parked in an abandoned turn around at the end of a logging road. A little after I got set up another couple of hunters showed up and parked their 5'er sort of in front of me. They said that they would be leaving early Sunday afternoon and I wasn't leaving until later that day so it shouldn't be in the way.
I go to leave Sunday evening and their trailer is still there and no sign of them. I didn't have a 5th wheel hitch so I couldn't move their trailer out of the way. By myself, I jockeyed my trailer back and forth and back and forth until I could get it past theirs. As I finally got in a position to get out of there I saw in the mirror the dump valve hooked on a stump and no longer holding back the tide of a weekends spoils. It had broken completely off. I tried to clean things up as best as possible but it was still the proverbial chocolate mess.
Fortunately, I didn't run across the other hunters on the way out and have to explain my little oopsie.

Went to a shopping center to practice backing in and when I returned home I conveniently backed into something on the edge of the driveway and damamged my rear bumper.

I'm sure I have several from just the first 3 Trips! But the first time we were so excited about getting our used RV that we set out for a one night trip to a local casino for some fun (we spent most of the time in the RV, not gambling ) and we didn't know how to level the vehicle, since neither my partner or I had any experience at all with RVs from the past... The ground was not level, so we felt like we were floating all night as we tried to sleep.

I made a boondocking miscalculation!

I stocked the camper with plenty of canned goods before a weekend out in the woods. I also stocked the camper with at 120 volt can opener, but I DIDN'T pack and inverter! I had no way of opening the canned food!

Engiuity came to the rescue when I started getting hungry! I did have a screwdriver in the TV though, along with some other tools! I disassembled the can opener and spun the motor with a cordless drill!

I had just picked my my brand new Raptor toy hauler. First trip was a nice 4 day trip. I drove home in the worst weather consisting of rain, wind, bad visibility etc. So after getting home I was parking it during the same weather. It was hard to see and this trailer had a angled roof so it was lower in the front then gets taller towards the back. So I couldnt get it the trailer to back in where I wanted it. I got mad pulled up in a rush, trailer went under a low hanging oak tree limb approz 6 in dia. So I ripped the roof open 7 feet long, tore off the ladder rack on the roof, almost ripped off the AC unit too. I had just put insurance on it the week before this trip. The cost of a new roof was $5000.00. (ins paid it all) All the trees in my driveway are now trimmed higher than the rig so that will never happen again. So keep and eye in the sky or it will cost you dearly. Jeff

Second to maiden voyage out with our 32' Rambler trailer - decided to take off after work friday night (mid summer) so that we could stay 2 nights in Daingerfield State Park, TX. It's about a 3 hour drive from Dallas and we arrived at the park about 10:30 pm. We thought we had been smart by calling ahead and reserving a spot....WRONG!!! It's pitch black outside (new moon) and the park has tiny narrow roads with huge pines closeby and everywhere. We carefully trek all around the park looking for our "reserved" site - and finally find a TINY U-shaped pull through lined with 100' tall pine trees. Against DW's better judgement I decide I can 'git'r done and pull all 55' of our rig into this tiny unlevel pull through - after all its late friday night after a long hard week! Well it did not take long to realize that I was in deep dooodooo!! I couldn't go forward - I couldn't see to go back, and to boot the DW points out all the poison Ivy my rigs running through as I'm trying to swing wide! Anyway after 10 minutes of jockying I finally pull through with literally no more than an inch to spare on either side - can't even get the truck doors open. So I admit this site ain't gonna work and just when I think I'm out and clear we hear a large crash!!! Still don't know to this day what I hit, but nearly wiped off our scare light on the side of our trailer and had to recaulk the angle trim on the rear of the trailer...nothing like being a campsite spectacle at 10:30 pm!!!

Two (no 3) important lessons learned that trip!!!

1.) No more leaving for unfamiliar turf after dark
2.) Reservations don't mean much!
3.) Listen to the DW!!!

After tooling around the park we finally found a beautiful, hidden, park host site with full hookups - we took the chance and set up shop there and I worked on my bruised ego with a hot shower - and wondering all night long when the poison ivy would show up!!

Almost a good memory now!!!!
