Swissmiss, Don't know what you were driving on the "Devils Backbone" in the Mexican Sierra Madres but when we drove our Coach with Toad it made the "Top of the World Highway" look like a cake walk! We drove the TOP in rain with mud but there were no difficult situations.

dav5942 Glad you made it savely.
The Devils Back Bone is paved, for those who do not know it. It does have more hair pin curves and much much more Truck traffic, and we only drove it with our truck.
We like to err on the side of caution, and since we have beem full timing for 7 years it has served us well. In our opinion, and it is just our humble opinion, a smaller RV will have not problem driving the TOWH.
We think a Fiver over 30 feet / 14’000 may get into trouble if the driver should have to brake on wet muddy road. I just give you information and pictures so you all can make an educated decision. You all know your driving experiences and skill the best.
I did take some small videos of the road and if someone is interested, send me your Email address. Be glad to send them to you for a more informed view.
We have talked to some folks and what they did is drive up to Chicken and then drove their Cars to Dawson City and spend a couple nights in a Hotel before heading back to their rigs.

Here are some pics from the River’s Edge RVP. If you are here with a tent – you really need to conceder this park. As you can see you are in the “front row”.

We arrived at River View RVP with very nice efficient, accommodating staff.( site 30) They are waiting on a new bigger router for their WIFI, which should arrive this week. They do not have as much river front as River’s Edge. The sites are a bid whider then at Rivers Edge.
It is very quiet here. They have 161 spaces and a lot of pull thought’s and offer Dog sitting. They offer at lot of showers.

My husband woke up with a fever and a head cold – he never is sick??? So we had to cancel our plans for today and I guess I have no more excuses to post pone laundry duty.

We bought the Great Alaskan Tour Saver coupon book for 99. – Dollars. And we will finally be using for the Gold mine and River Boat tour. The two for one coupon in there will just about pay for it. After that it is all money in out pocket. I have been told you can get them here in Alaska at Safeway Groceries stores.
We saw 2 Wal-Mart’s in Fairbanks so far besides Safeway and Fred Meyers.

Swissmiss,

Thank you for the pictures of Rivers Edge. We will be there later this month. We stayed at River's Edge about 5 years ago when we were tent camping.

Swissmiss, you asked why the State of Alaska's side of the TOW highway is worse than the Yukon side. The Yukon side was originally built to allow truck traffic to the Sixty Mile mining district, a long time vital part of the Yukon economy. Alaska runs a reverse Robin Hood type of system. Even though most all the state's revenues come from the rural areas of the state, fishing, mining, timber, oil, etc., most of the money gets spent in the urban areas of the state. Since Anchorage has over half the state's population, they control the votes in the state legislature. It has for many years been easier for Anchorage to get money to resurface a bike path than for a rural project to get funded. Plus Alaska runs on a "boom or bust" get rick quick economy and I don't feel they (the legislators, etc.) really appreciate the tourist industry. Currently, in my unbiased (LOL) opinion they are more interested in promoting a gas pipe line than in developing the state to be a tourist mecca of which it could be. Florida has figured this out, of course the Mouse runs the state. (whats good for the Mouse is good for Florida, philosophy) Alaska could do the same for the long haul but all planning in Alaska, is and has been, for the short haul. Hence, the highway system hasn't been expanded in many years or improved over what is minimally needed. In my opinion the Denali Highway, as an example, could have twice the maintenance done to it without ruining the charm of the drive. But that will never happen it seems.

Thanks for all the great pictures and info. We will be leaving Monday for our trip to Alaska from California. We will travel highway 16 and then 37 Cassier Highway. Going home we will go through Banff to Yellowstone. Then to Okla. If you have any more favorite camp grounds you liked I would like to hear about them. Best wishes,
Mickey
