Has anyone else ran into self-serve gas pump's that will not authorize your credit card without providing the zipcode first that is associated with the billing address on file for the credit card. This happpened to me a couple month's ago in Georgia and I just heard from a friend that it happened to him today. I could not purchase gas from this station with any of my card's because they would not accept a Canadian postal code at all. I am afraid that it may come to the point where Canadian's can't use their CC's in the US unless they fix this system glitch.

Yes. Happened to me Sunday in Lebanon, Indiana. I was extremely irate over that and very vocal. I'm sure I embarrassed my wife. On top of the that the pump stopped at $50.00 ... and I wasn't full! That made me even more irate as I had to start the whole process over again to get a full tank.

My wife thinks its for marketing reasons. I think it might be to help credit card fraud. Who knows for sure? But it sure set me over the edge! I really despise that gas station, but it did have the lowest prices!

I think it might be for fraud protection. I put in a bogus zip code and the pump wouldn't authorize my card.

This happens to me all the time (asking for a zip code) when I use my AmEx card at area stores; Target, Walmart, Vons, etc.

If you go inside you should be able to provide adequate identification and use the card. It is a means of fraud protection and not intended to keep legitimate users from using them. Good luck / Skip

I have no problem putting in a zip code. I think it is another way to cut credit card fraud. I am beginning to see it more and more.

They have been doing that on the West Coast for at least the last two years.

It's becoming quite a common practice, a measure to foil the use of stolen cards (who likely wouldn't know your billing address). I'm a supporter of it (as I once was victim of big bills from a stolen card), but admit I'd never thought about the Canadian-visitor aspect.

I need more help understanding why some folks are upset about this. It is in place purely to add another layer of protection for me...the card holder. It makes it just that much harder for someone else who may have "picked up" my card to use it.

Many credit cards unlike debit cards do not have a PIN associated with them. Just a "swipe" through the reader and the transaction is made.

It's certainly not an invasion of privacy because the credit card company already knows where you live (and a lot more about you). It's also an encrypted transaction.
