I leave mine open all the time.Make sure when you fill up you fill the stock tank first.

How good does the T connection from RDS(Northern Tools) work? Does it shut off with a check valve of some kind, or do you have to watch your guage. I am thinking of ordering one, and using a 12v pump and fill main tank at rest stop's.

the rds gravity has a DOT approved roll over valve that will also function as the shut off when the fuel gets to the level of where the aux is plumbed into the truck tank.

I leave mine open when traveling/towing. Diesel only flows down into mine about twice as fast as the truck guzzles it.

I shut it off when not in use just because it makes me feel better. I have forgotten it for days in the past and no drops or smells anywhere.

It would take a long time standing around waiting for it to fill the truck tank.

I know this is a old thread from last year but I'm going to resurrect it.
I'm ready to purchase a RDS tank and I'm really going back and forth between the 90 gal and the 60 gal tank. The 90 will hold some serious fuel and add some serious weight at the same time, and eats up the whole bed area in front of the hitch.
The 60gal model seems about rite It leaves a foot of more behind the hitch, I guess a place to throw some wood or what not.
I just can't decide. What's the going size you guys are using?

I got the 90 gallon model for maximum fuel management flexibility. It isn't full all the time, just when I need it, but it sure is nice to reduce the pain of filling at diesel stations by a factor of three while on crosscountry trips.

Which 60 and which 90? I have the 72118 90 gallon NT/RDS vertical tank that is 26"h x 14" thick x 60" wide. The 60" was the pain in the butt part, it barely fit within the bed plus left little room for the 3/8" ball valve.

One thing you may want to think about doing is installing a fuel water separator filter between your aux fuel tank and the OEM fuel tank. Mine has saved my butt at least once from dirty contaminated fuel. Plus it's a lot easier to drain than the OEM HFCM. I have four fuel filters on my '06 PSD and I can drain the two aftermarket filters in much less time that it takes to drain the HFCM.

Gravity feed is simple, easy, fairly cheap and reliable.

Wow, What a awesome write up Al. Thanks so much, great information in there.
After thinking about it some more last night I think I'm going big. The benefits much out weigh the loss of bed space. I don't use my truck like I did when I worked out on the job anyway's, it pulls the trailer, that's what I got it for. If I can't find a little extra space to throw a few items in a 40' toy hauler than somethings wrong.
Maybe I'll come back and add a few install pictures when I get it done. But I doubt I can beat what Al did.

Joe, let me know how it goes because curious minds want to know. I priced a 60gal under the bed from transfer flow here in Denver and they wanted a pretty penny (like $1500.00) for the tank/install. Haven't inquired but are the ones that go into the bed cheaper??

Howdy Jason, The 90 gal RDS in-bed tank is like $700 + $69 for the fuel fill kit. The 60 gal is a $100 cheaper. If your like me and don't use the bed for hauling stuff when not towing then a in-bed type should be fine. Not as cool as the built in frame install type but half the cost. I'm hoping I can find a place local that sells the RDS tanks so I can save a little on shipping. The thought of making it over a 1000 miles without stopping at a gas station is pretty awesome. Much less when I see a cheap price, I'll be filling up
