Slightly more info here.

Doesn't look like it is a factor here but a reminder: pay attention to those yellow speed limit signs! If yer in any kind of a rig, that "35 MPH" sign is for you!

What DOES look like a factor, is that nobody was wearing a seatbelt. and there were apparently a few others, at least. so maybe they were, what, watching TV? Playing Cards? Raiding the Refrig? People forget that driving is driving. Maybe there was a moose in the road and the driver swerved and lost control. They're also from Hawaii, which suggests they don't do a lot of long-distance driving... someone could have been too tired.

Whatever happened, everyone should have been seated and wearing a belt. And there shouldn't be more people in a coach than there are seats with belts. One can also presume that, since they're from Hawaii, they're not driving their own rig. I'm a lot more careful with my own bought-and-paid-for toys than I might be if I were in some rental. Maybe they had a blowout and the tires were too old.

Lots of maybes. But they still should have been in seats with seatbelts. Not that I'd want to be in a motorhome in a wreck. But i'd rather be in the cab of a Class C (or a B), than many other places. They're still built to conform to all the highway safety standards...where most A's do not have to conform (and I won't even get started on travel trailers), and I've seen some flattened RV's. It also appears that these people were not the drivers. So maybe no matter where they were, they might have been at risk.

I hope they provide further details later so we can all take some lessons from the experience others (it's so very much less uncomfortable than learnin from your own mistakes).

Pat=Trish (putting soapbox away.

Be safe out there...

From what the paper said today, www.adn.com, the driver was trying to make room for a vehicle heading southbound and his rear tires got in some soft sand which pulled him into the ditch. The couple that died were sitting on the couch and when the rv hit the trees, it basically ripped open the right side and the couple were ejected and died. They had two children that were staying at a campground with friends while the parents/group went fishing in Seward. Family members are on their way to pick up the children.

Very sad.

About those "yellow" speed limit signs. Those signs are intended for cars and other 4 wheelers and not large trucks, busses, RV's etc. Keep that in mind when you are going around those bends.

None of the rv's I've seen lately 2006-07 have any seat belts except for the drivers. Some states have passed laws that require everyone in the vehicle including p/u's to wear a belt.

That's in Class A's, I suppose?

I have a class C (Born Free). There are two swivel bucket seats in the dining area, both have seat belts, and both front passenger and driver have seat/shoulder belts and airbags.

One of the main reasons I chose a class C over a class A is their requirement to conform to National Highway Traffic Safety Admin (I'm guessing at the name) safety guidelines, making it a little more possible that I would survive a crash. I don't like the idea of dying while satisfying my dreams.

But I want them on my sofa too, and I hear that you can get them installed.
