We are going to South Dakota in August and are looking for a great (Ok just nice) centrally located place near Rapid City or Keystone. Where did you stay and what was it like? I pretty much know the attractions we are going to visit but I'm not finding a lot of useful info about area campgrounds. Thanks!

We stayed in Wall with relatives, visited the badlands, Rapid City (bear country, reptile world, and a few other places), Rushmore, Lead/Deadwood and the Homestake Goldmine tour, day trip to Devils tower in Wyo.
We visited Sturgis one year in non-bike week, and the following year during bike week - a bigggg difference!

Rafter J is in Hill City. It is hugh, centrally located 6 miles or so to Rushmore, about the same to Crazy Horse, easy access to Custer STate Park and two hours (one way) from Devils Tower.
Here's Rafter J's URL:

Stay at Big pine. Its by far the best campground in the area in iMHO. Great people run it The campground is litte out of the way past Running Horse but the sites are well shaded but no pool.

We stayed at Horsethief Lake Campground, a national forest campground site just 2 miles from Mt Rushmore, quite walkable. Beautiful site on a lake, just 22 RV sites. No hook ups, but man I wish we had more than one day and change to stay there. It's regarded as one of the top places to camp in the country, probably because of it's setting and proximity to Rushmore.

Not to be confused with the private Horse Thief Campground & RV Resort. Never been there and don't know anything about that one.
My strong preference now is to camp at national forest and other primitive sites which tend to be more spacious and natural settings. After being on the road for 4 weeks without hookups last summer, I can't seen going back to resorts.

Chris' Campground in Spearfish it VERY accomodating. Nice pool, grassy sites and the folks there will go out of their way to help with just about any request. It has the appearance of being right off I90 but it is quite a ways from the freeway and surrounded by trees. Super WalMart within 1 mile for supplies and such. If you happen to be DOD connected, there is a very nice campground at Ellsworth AFB in Rapid City.

We stayed at Custer State Park in the Legion Lake campground. Had a bison visit one day and wander through the area, taking his sweet time and providing some great Kodak moments. We were tenting but there was a mix of trailer, popup, 5vers, and a Class C or two. Wonderful location across from a pretty lake, 7 miles from the town of Custer, near the road junctions for the wildlife loop and other roads to attractions. Oh, and cheap.
More info and pics here.

I stayed at Chris' Campground in Spearfish last summer - late July. It is run by the owner's - one or both were always available. There are shaded sites and easy access to Spearfish. As noted above, easy access to and from the freeway but it is quite a ways away - wonderfully quiet and rural feel. There is a wonderful field for dog walking if you travel with a dog(s).

Just got back from Black Hills. We took our 12 yo twin grandsons and stayed at Rafter J. Of the other campgrounds we saw this is the best and is centrally located for the area sites.

I'll second the recommendation for Big Pine Campground in Custer. Great location, great CG and run by great people.
