Just returned from there. Stayed at Mystery Mountain CG less than 20 minutes from Mt. Rushmore next to Bear Country. Lots of trees (shade) which was a blessing considering the heat. No problem backing in MH. Very well maintained everything looks new. Site was a little unlevel and needed to purchase additional sewer hose for hook-up, it was to far to the rear of site and I had to park to the front so to accommodate slides and awning. Some sites have concrete pads. Free pancakes every morning making it easier to hit the road and get in the sightseeing. Drove thru Rafter J and it seemed nice but overall I don't think I did wrong. All campgrounds have their pluses and minuses.

We stayed at Crooked Creek Campground in Hill City in mid May this year. Nice rustic looking place, but with hookups. And yep.. it has a crooked creek running thru the campground. Large sites, grassy, shaded, small store, and centrally located. Very clean and nicely decorated bathrooms and showers. Good Rates! Would definitely stay there again!

We were out there last June and stayed at Hart Ranch and thought it was great, 400+ sites and all of them are paved.

The only problem with it for a lot of people is that it is a membership only campground, but they do have "preview" specials where you can stay for a couple night for pretty cheap as long as you listen to their sales pitch. Of course the C2C membership got us in for $8/night

Rafter J. We would definitely go back!
We've also stayed at Custer SP (I think Blue Bell CG - it's been quite a few years). We'd have gone back there but they had no hookups; heard they added some elec sites this year.

Last month we stayed at Gamelodge CG in Custer SP. It now has electric on most sites. You will probably need advanced reservations. A great CG if you like SPs.
