I have a 1999 E450..ABS/disc on front and rear..
While driving yesterday the Brake/ABS light
on the dash came on...
Brake fluid level OK.. Brake Pads new..No change in braking behavior.
Anyone else have this problem.

Same problem with my 99 Hurricane on a Ford chassis. My mechanic says that it is probably a sensor or a bad connection. It resets OK by turning ignition off(parked of course),and back on. Now that we will be off theroad for a few, I will have it checked. He also said to be aware that if the light is on, you have NO abs working. Be careful!

The DTC (diagnostic trouble code) should be retrieved and it will give you an idea where to start. If the rear VSS (vehicle speed sensor) is bad it will have a C1230 code or similar. Check the wiring to the VSS which is on top of the rear differential. If that is ok, it's probably the sensor. Price range is around 15-20 bucks.

Thank you for your replys.
Johno02.
My light did not go out after turning ignition off and on again.

Did you have this problem and the rear sensor fixed the problem?

I should of mentioned this..I have a Scan Gauge hooked up but it didn't show any trouble codes.
I'll get underneath tomorrow and check all the connections.
Thank you all for your help...Ken

As with any type of trouble/check light, the codes must be retreived by the correct type of reader. I don't think OBD-II scanners will retrieve ABS codes. Without knowing the trouble codes, any attempts at diagnosis/repair are just wild guesses.

My mechanic said that the code had to be checked when the light was on. Apparently it resets each time. For me, this is going to be a problem, as it never comes on when we are anywhere close.

yes, on a dakota PU, ABS and brake lights came on, stayed on. didn't try my code reader since my mechanic friend said that mine wouldn't pick up brake problems, only electrical??
same problem on a 99 ford class A chassis, check engine light would come on, speedometer quit, replaced VSS, happened at least twice. at $15 I would go ahead and replace it, heck I think they charged me $85 just to plug in their code reader.

The speed sensor is a chronic problem on the Fords.
