Has anyone done a gear change on their E450 with a V10 from a 4.56 to a 5.13 ratio? With these gas prices now I dont need to drive my 2003 31' Class C at 75 mph. Driving it at 60 or 65 puts it too low in the RPM range in OD to be comfortable. Anyone that has changed to a 5.13 let me know how you like it.

I'd like to piggyback on Mike's thread, if I may -
does anyone know if I can change the rear end ratio on my E350?
I wonder what ratios are available.
(For the same reasons as Mike's)

2 Questions;
Wouldn't you be burning about the same amount of gas at 65 with a 5.13 as you would the 4.56 at 75? Is there a gear change option in between the two?

Not to mention that there goes any warranty you may have.

Hmmm, my C class has 4.10's, and you want in the 5's?
I'd bet the chassis is geared for maximum compromise between drivabilty and fuel economy from the factory. When you're spinning the engine faster, the tranny is working harder creating more heat, which is the death of all automatic trannys.
To really see if your engine is "uncomfortable" as it is currently set up, run a vacuum gauge for several miles. Do you have a tach as well? If so, note the rpm range where you're achieving the highest inches of mercury, and then check your speed. If you want to go faster, change to shorter gears. If you want to go slower, change to taller gears, all this to set up your pace with the comfort zone of the driveline.
Hope this helps! And yes, talk to a truck dealer about any warranty issues first.

What kind of mileage do you get driving 75 MPH? I can't imagine driving my GR at 75...

Warranty? Shouldnt the warranty be expired by now it being a 2003? I guess I dont expect it to get better mileage by doing the gear change. I expect it to get better mileage by driving 60 or so instead of 70 or so. With the current gear the ening seems to be to low in its power band at 60 in OD. It down shifts more on grades than if I drive 70. In 3rd gear its wound way out at 55. If the conditions are perfect it drives ok at 60, ie, no wind, no grade, no toad. Now it gets from 6.5 (poor conditions) to 8.5 (perfect conditions) mph. In a couple of weeks we are taking a long trip so I want to get the change done before that to see how it does. It has the 4.56 gears in it now.

I have thought the smae thing about our gas powered Endura. Its happy place is is 2400 rpm which is around 68 mph. It would be nice if it ran 2400 rpm at about 62-63 mph. When we pull our 28' racecar trailer I always set the cruise at 68 mph because it does the least amount of shifting between gears there. I think the Endura has a 4.56 gear, wonder how a 4.88 would do. The new Super Nova has a 6.14, now thats low.
The week before last we drove home from the black hills SD back to MN and had the cruise set at between 73-76 mph for 15 hours. The rig ran flawlessly. Sucked some major gas but we're not retired and don't have all the time in the world to get to and from places.

Some E450s came with 5.13 gears from Ford. I found that out when looking for axles at junkyards. I'm assuming probably a special fleet order option or something. That big of a change may require a carrier change too, so that'll add some $. But, it'll lower MPGs probably.
davemittan - 4.56 can go in the E350 also.

Thanks for the info! Wouldn't I also want the appropriate speedometer cable to go with it?
