We're heading for the Thousand Trails Snowflower campground in Emigrants Pass (near Cisco and Donner). From there we'll be heading to Mammoth. Map Quest is taking me from I80 to CA-267 to CA-28 to Hwy 50 and finally on to 395. What worries me is Hwy 28 looks like a road around the lake...which I thought I remembered as narrow and curvy. Is this the best way to go? I remember years ago being on some road around the lake where it dropped off on both sides. I didn't like it in a car and want to make sure that I don't wind up on that route!

We live in Truckee and use that route to access where you are going. It is very straightforward and you do not have to deal with the traffic in Reno and most of Carson City. The road is fine although it is curvy as you noted. you will not be on the road around Emerald Bay that seems to drop off on both sides. You will be going through Incline Village and up to Spooner Summit, really a piece of cake.

Golden Girl,
I would agree with Litch. Last fall I drove my 38’ motorhome over the route suggested by Map Quest, and it was a breeze, and certainly more scenic and less congested than the route through Reno and Carson City. I spent most of last summer in Truckee, and just returned from a week in Mammoth Lakes. Either place is better than being here on the Mojave Desert.
