We were camped next to someone from Iowa not too long ago. I told him that was one of the places we hadn't been yet. He said, "Don't make a special trip." Guess we'll need to visit there anyway. Toni

We drove through Iowa on our recent trip to South Dakota JUST so we could go through Dyersville and see the Field of Dreams. That was really neat, but it was the only thing of interest we saw along the way. Along I-20 there are no rest areas and very few places to stop. I'm sure there are some wonderful places in Iowa, but they are probably along another route

Wow! I don't know if this thread is funny or depressing. I feel sorry for Iowinians or whatever they would call themselves. I'm actually trying to plan a Wisconsin/Minnesota trip for two weeks from now. I was thinking about Iowa/Minnesota instead, but guess there's not much there. We're thinking of Mall of America, a zoo, maybe a cave, and maybe a waterfall as far as attractions. No, I'm not hijacking this thread. If you know of any nice place maybe with a lake in northeast Iowa, I'm all ears.

We've heard some good things about some of the Dubuque County parks. No lakes that I know of, but fishing streams. There are also some good ones right on the Miss River - we're considering So.Sabula Lakes CG (county park on an island in the river), but haven't been there. The lakes area is probably more north central/northwest IA, around Spirit Lake.
BTW, Iowa even has a national park. The far northeast corner features Effigy Mounds National Park. Interesting place for a day visit (which we did from Wyalusing SP, Wis. one year).

I-20? I think that's in the south somewhere. Perhaps you meant I-35? But the scenery along there isn't bad, IMO.
Wife and I go through Iowa every year on our way to Custer, Leaving next Saturday. We have camped at different locations and have never had a bad expierence. The people are super nice and ther are things to see. If you like motorcycles then a side trip to Anamosa is a must. The national motorcycle musem is there and it is worth the trip. Also the home of J&P cycles main store. A little piece of heaven for a motorcycle lover.
We go to Onawa, IA whenever we want to make a quick weekend trip. Blue Lake is a small lake with Lewis & Clark State Park on one side, and a KOA on the other. We love both - lots of big cottonwood trees & very quiet at night.
I've always enjoyed driving through IA - lots of gently rolling hills, fields, and trees. Other people disagree, but I find it to be a pleasant drive. I-80 has frequent rest stops, and they have free WiFi.
I used to travel a lot for business, and I'm convinced that you can find something interesting in ANY city or state. (Sometimes you have to look hard, but it's there!) Maybe it's a nice scenic spot, a little hometown family owned restaurant, or a county park or museum... But no matter where you are, if you look hard enough, you'll find something great about the spot!

It was I-20...it's a small highway that starts in IL and goes through Galena, Dubuque, and on over to I-35. It was pretty...but after a couple of hours the corn fields all start looking the same, lol. Like I said though, I'm sure there are plenty of cool things in Iowa...we just didn't go through that much of the state.
