Hello All!

About a month ago I typed a post regarding my transmission as it was just starting to act up. I received some good advice however, after several repairs, the problem is only partially fixed. I am looking for any other input or experiences that might be helpful.

Our MH is a 99 Monaco on a Ford platform with 26K miles on it. The problem is that the trans is shifting very hard during acceleration. The catch is that if I shut the engine off at a red light and restart, everything is then fine. Here is what has been done so far by several mechanics that have been involved with this repair.

1) Unit fully inspected with pan down, new filter and fluid
2) Two sensors had failure codes so they were replaced
3) The ignition module was replaced
4) The wiring in the shifter was replaced (overdrive was not working) Now my overdrive works.

There are no codes for the engine or trans at this point. Unit is running great other than the hard shift and again that is corrected with a restart. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Al

Torque converter one more guess

Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.

Disconnect the battery and see if it shifts smoother. The transmissiom is electronic and has features that allow it to adapt to driver traits. Mine has done this several times over the years. Some would say a good firm shift is desirable?

I had a e 350 Ford Van that did the same thing....turned out to be the torque converter.

Possible intermittent ignition switch. Had the same problem, 2000 Tropical. Now every time I start rig I verify good contact by turning jacks on and off (emergency brake needs to be on). If jack light doesn't come on I turn ignition switch off and resart. Was happenning intermittently about every 4 or 5 starts.

On our unit, the torque converter unlocks during shifts and shifts are smooth. I wonder if your torque converter isn't just staying locked up?

Also, did you buy this new or used? If used, the previous owner may have put in a "shift kit"?

Also, the engine timing is often reduced during a shift to, again, soften the shift----perhaps your engine computer is goofy or not always communicating with the transmission controller. Just a couple of ideas.

Thanks to everyone for your responses! I can't help but think that this is all electrical but we will explore the torque converter as well.

Best Regards,

Al

I am starting to have a similar problem and it seems to be tied to the VSS. Soon after I experience the harsher shifting the speedometer will quit. Sometimes all I have to do is shut off the ignition and restart, other times I have to stop and backup a few feet, then the speedometer works and the shifts are smooth. I understand there is a TSB concerning grounds that remedies the situation. I haven't found the TSB yet. I have a 1999 Winnebago Brave 35C on the F53 chassis with 62,000 miles.

If it shifts hard from 1st to 2nd its not the converter. Sounds like a sensor isn't sensing the engine load properly. Shouldn't hurt anything, its just annoying. Don't let any of these transmission places tell you it needs a new tourque converter.

Jhilley,

Let me know if you find the TSB.

Thanks!
