Thanks to everyone that replied, like i said in my post the exta fuel is not about saving on the cost of fuel or the extra weight, my 5er only weighs 10,500lbs and it tows with no problems but the extra fuel is about in my case last weekend having less than a 1/4 of a tank and the closest station is 1 1/2 hrs away but the good thing was it was all down hill and no problems getting their, but like i told my wife we knew where the station was next time we may not, i have gps navagation im my tv that tells me where a gas station is but it does'nt tell me if it sells diesel. thanks again''''''''''''''

I installed the DOT approved Transfer Flow 50 gallon tank and have been very happy with it.

I just finished towing a buddies 5er. with the same basic set-up and GVWR as my NEW HORIZONS 5er. currently being built. Based upon the initial MPG while towing...one spare 5 Gallon tank of diesel will get me an additional 60 miles. I'm thinking that I'll always be within 40-50 miles of a fuel station...(those are my plans anyway)..
(Now watch me get stranded 61 miles from the nearest filling station)!
Just my $.02

I always expected to be within 50 miles of a fuel stop. Then I moved to Arizona...
The other thing you need to remember are grades out west. I once came within a gallon or so of running empty once because I entered a stretch of road 40 miles between gas stations, and figured I'd be OK based on my "normal" MPG performance. What I didn't realize was that 20 miles of that 40 mile stretch was a 6% uphill grade, and my fuel economy was cut by about 50% from what I'd expected. Had it not been downhill the last eight miles, I'd have run the tank empty.

CD,
Where did you get your tank and does it work with your trucks information center? I have a 2008 F350 Lariat and I wrote to Transfer Flow - they said they have started making the larger capacity replacement tanks but they would make my "fuel to empty" information incorrect. I like that feature and use it a lot (it's actually pretty accurate!) so I want to keep that. Does yours work like original?
I am interested in carrying more fuel as Alaska can be a big place!

On our '01 Dodge the transferflow tank doubled my fuel capacity so the distance to empty readout number is double what it reads.

I am also interested in your setup. After having traveled to North Carolina, via Virginia, West Virginia and Eastern Ohio it was hard to find ultra low sulfur diesel. So I am interested in putting a in-bed tank in. I carry 4 five gallon cans and haved had the occassion to use them at least 5 times now. With the government mandate of ulsd it would only seem reasonable that all stations would carry it, but they don't. What a hassle.
